Why did Davis go after Hyde? He was not happy.

It was a cheap shot on his first wife as well.

It was intended as a wisecrack.    The mores of 1976 weren’t the same as today.    Believe me, Weaver said a lot worse.

As to Cuellar, I understand Weaver made the remark after Cuellar complained about not getting enough starts in 1976, a year in which he went 4-13 with a 4.96 ERA (66 ERA+).    To me it was just Weaver’s colorful way of saying that he felt he’d given Cuellar plenty of chances that year.    Not a comment on Cuellar’s overall performance during his career.    And my point in quoting Weaver was that Cuellar got a lot more chances that year than a pitcher without his track record would have gotten.     Even Earl Weaver believed that a guy who had earned it over a long period of time deserved some rope.   Buck was far from alone in that regard.

Earl Weaver: “I gave Mike [Cuellar] more chances than I gave my first wife.”

Ex-wife jokes (and wife jokes) were popular back then. Earl said it to respond to Cuellar in a way that he knew would draw a laugh from the press and fans. It actually took the edge off the issue and nobody asked him for an explanation.

Ex-wife jokes stopped being popular when Woody Allen's first wife won a lawsuit against him for jokes he made about "my ex-wife" in his standup routine.

Interesting, I’d never heard about that lawsuit.    It looks like he settled it, rather than her actually winning it.

Davis went 0-4 lowering his seam average to .170,

Matching last year's .168 is not out of the question.  But his OPS is 23 points higher last year and he won't get enough playing time to drop it that much.

So it looks like we can officially say the 2019 Davis is an improvement on the 2018 Davis.

Was last night his final starting appearance at OPACY?  Stay tuned.  ?

I hope he is in the lineup Sunday.  The last home game.  Because that might be an indication they are letting the fans "say goodbye" to him, and give me a hope that maybe they intend to cut him loose sometime before February.

If some pitches are grooved for him then we'll really know.

The End of an Errah!

I’d say his OPS is a little higher because they sheltered him more.   For example, only 19% of his plate appearances have come vs. LHP, compared to 28% last year.    Saying that, his splits vs. RHP/LHP are way more extreme this year than last year.

By the way, I was playing softball last weekend and in my final at bat the other team moved one of their infielders into the outfield, leaving only only guy on the LH side.     The first pitch I saw, I just hit a ground ball where the 3B usually would be for a single.     As I rounded first, I said to the first baseman, who I know is an Orioles fan, “who do you guys think I am, Chris Davis?”

If they remove him early on Sunday to applause, you might have a newsflash!  ?

    • They also haven’t announced the times, yet.
    • Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.
    • You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.
    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
