Brian Matusz has received a major league contract that runs from 2009 to 2013 and includes a $3.2 million signing bonus.

The contract breaks down in payments of $425,000, $500,000, $550,000, $650,000 and $700,000. So we're looking at a maximum total of $6.025 million if he's in the majors during that entire time.

Because it's a split contract that includes a separate minor league salary, Matusz is guaranteed $3,472,5000. The big bucks come once he's in the majors.

So he would average about $55,000 per year in the minors if true, which isnt bad either.

Interesting stuff there...The Pirates, of all teams, gave 900K to a 20th round selection...You are seeing a lot more of this nowadays.

It will be interesting to see what effect this has on the draft....My guess is teams are saying that spending the money on these guys is a great long term investment and may allow them to not spend that "mid level money" on guys like Payton, Walker, etc.....

It makes a lot of sense.

Also to keep in mind is someone will get booted from the 40 man roster for Mr. Matusz.

I wonder who is the next one to get booted from the "island." *I am looking at you Mr. Loewen*

Wouldn't taking Loewen off the 40 man roster mean the O's couldn't collect insurance against his salary?

Maybe a minor league guy who is out for the year would cost less?

Maybe one of the s**tty pichers or little league middle infielders on the 40 man roster?

Loewen can go on the 60 man DL...That will open up a slot on the 40 man roster.

Loewen only made $816k for 2008. Most policies only pay if a player is out for an extended period of time 3+ months. Even if he was insured and they have to forfeit the cash, $135+k is not going to bankrupt the team.
