On MLB Hot Stove today, they brought on Chris Davis to talk about his "exceedingly generous" donation to charity.

No, it wasn't the balance of his contract to the Angelos sons'  "Make Baltimore Great Again" fund.  They'll have to go back to selling pencils on the sidewalk instead.

Davis gave $3M to the University of Maryland Children's Hospital.  It's the largest donation by any Baltimore sports figure ever. Tip of the cap to Chris.  Anything to help out the littlest ones is tops in my book.

Very nice indeed, and glad he did it. He certainly didn't have to, but it is a PR move. 3 million on a 150 million deal, plus the tax incentives for the donation ends up costing him considerably less. He could be donating at least 50% of his salary, based on his performance...he'll still live a very comfortable life. It is certainly an indicator that there may be some "guilt" associated with his contract.

Or he’s a good guy that just appreciates what he has and wants to give back.

Cynicism rears its ugly head.

Steamer (the projection system I referenced before) has Calhoun at 1.5 WAR in 2020, so that's 12M at a 8M/WAR valuation making the 13M seem like a minor overpay.

Always good to keep in mind that teams don't pay for past performance and Calhoun is 32 and had a abysmal 2018.

I think Adell may have affected Calhoun's context there too.

Yeah, there are usually other factors other than purely money. I just wanted to point out that Calhoun wasn’t a data point refuting a 7-8M/WAR valuation, but a data point supporting it.

That was a nice thing he did.
