I was lucky that my Dad bought a program and wrote down the lineups and made a note that the game had the highest regular season Oriole attendance ever up to that date.  So thanks to bb-ref it was pretty easy to track down.

Start time: 7:41 pm

Game time: 3:20

You were up well past your bedtime, young man!

My first game was a senators game, I remember the players, just not the game itself, and back then they used to give out real Louisville sluggers to kids attending games.  I loved mine, did mine my handle up with the rough black electrical tape of that era, and the bigger i got, the better I was able to use that awesome bat. Damn, I wish my old man hadnt toss that SOB when I left home.

Yeah, I had a few of those Bat Day bats.    Can you imagine any team doing that today?

I remember going to Seat Cushion Day one time.   The game got way out of hand and it was a very sloppy game.   Some guy flung his seat cushion onto the field and then there was a barrage of seat cushions flying around.    Wouldn’t want to see something similar on Bat Day.

And it was a bus trip with Dad's work, so I'm sure we didn't get home until between 1 and 2am. I was eight, so yea, well past my bedtime.  I think somewhere I still have the felt pennant he bought me that night.  And I definitely have the program.  We sat in the yellow mezzanine seats on the third base side.

Didn't the Mets have baseball day that they had to forfeit, or almost forfeit, sometime in the last 10, maybe 15 years?  Balls thrown everywhere. Last time that will happen.

(I might be thinking of the Dodgers, and it was 1995).

Edit: apparently, “some guy” was John Lowenstein.

A few years ago, in the late innings of a lopsided loss against the Oakland A's on "seat cushion night" at Memorial Stadium, Lowenstein picked up his own cushion and sailed it onto the field. Hundreds more followed from the stands and play had to be halted to pick them all up.

I dislike Jeter the person, Jeter being a pinstriper.

While he wasnt much with the glove, its hard to deny his ability with the bat.

For the life of me, I dont get the clowns that voted him so many GG. His career dWAR was like -8.3.

Does he beyond in the HOF as a first ballot yes, I hate to see him get unanimous, when so many before him, deserved and didnt.

Somebody said once, who cares if I got in by unanimous, I am in, and thats the bottom line.

Is it though? I mean, the batting average and runs scored are nice, but the HRs and RBIs are pretty pedestrian in the era of the hitting shortstops. Definitely not a 1st ballet selection if you take away the celebrity / Yankee lore IMO.

I don't know if it was my first game or not, but I remember my Dad taking me to an O's game against Detroit and they had a pitcher named Ron Nischwitz.  This man sitting behind us yelled out real loud "Hey Nitwit!" when he was announced.  Being 8 years old, that sent me into a giggling fit that lasted a couple of innings.

I don’t like Jeter and think he is overrated but you can vote for 10 players so I see no reason he isn’t a unanimous choice.  I would like to see Bonds and Clemens get in this year.

As for BRob I suspect this will be the only year he is on the ballot.

I have no memory at all of the first baseball game I ever attended.   I’m sure it involved the Senators.   Who they played and what year it was, I have no idea.    My dad had a friend who worked for a U.S. Senator, and the “real” Senators had free passes to the baseball Senators games.    Once in a blue moon we’d get those tickets.

Mine first baseball game was in 1966 in Memorial Stadium.  I saw Jim Palmer pitch against (I believe) the Chicago White Sox.  My Dad bought me a pennant with a team photo on it and I was an Orioles fan for life. Boog Powell, Frank Robinson, Andy Etchebarren, and of course, Brooks Robinson were on that team.

Oh, almost certainly.    I’d be somewhat surprised if he got any votes.    Some players who received no votes last year included Derek Lowe (34.4 rWAR), Freddie Garcia (34.2) and Kevin Youkilis (32.6).    BRob is right in their neighborhood (30.4).    Some others who didn’t make the 5% threshold to stay on the ballot included Lance Berkman (52.1), Roy Oswalt (50.1), Miguel Tejada (47.3) and Placido Polanco (41.5).

The same reason Raffy Palmeiro won a gold glove the year he was a DH and played a handful of games at 1B. Good hitters for their position often get credit for being a good fielder. Jeter also had some highlight reel plays like the throw to homeplate against the A's in the playoffs that gave him a reputation for being a good fielder when it wasn't deserved.

And advanced fielding metrics didn't become widely excepted until later in Jeter's career. The same reason why Cal didn't get GG's earlier in his career when he deserved to.

Agreed, Jeter is a no brainer first ballot HOF even though he should have spent his career playing another position.

Google ten-cent beer night… That was quite a game.
