I am not sure he beat any odds as the Orioles were tanking.  I think on any other team he would have been sent back.

Look how few minor league players make it to the bigs? To me that’s an accomplishment. You could be right that other teams may have sent him back. But still this man made it to the bigs.

What is he going to learn in AAA?

He spends 2020 in AAA and what should we expect in 2021?  Is he going to be improved as a hitter or fielder?

This is where I am. The Orioles are going to be pretty bad next season. Why would they not want to see what they have in Martin at the major league level? Martin showed he could hit lefties effectively in the second half of last year so why not give him more opportunities against right-handers this year? Unless they are going to give Addison Russel a chance, I'm all for Martin going back out there next season.

The clubs have better than this already of course, but just for chewing the SS fat of Martin v. Hechavarria v. Iglesias, it'll be nice if Infield Outs Above Average comes out - Petriello's been teasing it on the Statcast podcast since before the holidays.  I guess they could hold to unveil in Spring Training or Opening Day but for Hot Stove would be better.  My taste for investing a couple more months in Martin sort of hinges on him truly profiling as a plus defender.

He had a solid season offensively at AA. The jump to the majors was too soon based on his development in 2018. He was selected due to service time and desperation by the Os. He can use a year at AAA to play and get at bats everyday. Hopefully he can get close to those 2018 numbers and be more prepared for MLB pitching when he comes up in 2021. That my opinion....Maybe his defensive skills can be polished and he can improve modestly also...Who knows. The value is in seeing if you can turn him into an everyday MLB player. Giving him a year at AAA to work on his games (especially his bat) gives him the best opportunity to advance.

This is my problem with taking low floor guys in the Rule 5 draft, if you send them back to AAA minors the following year, they are just eating up space on the 40 man roster. We’re pretty much committed to Martin for a bit now, but he’ll likely be similar to players that are readily available, and don’t require 40 man spots to keep as depth. Like SS Jose Rondon.

Check out Rondon’s 2018 season. We’d love if Martin had those type of numbers,

Defense peaks early.  His 2021 defense might very well be worse.

Exactly. It’s not like a season in AAA is going to improve his athleticism which would lead to more range.

I’m not rooting against Martin, but I don’t think he’s an integral piece of the rebuild.

Yeah - he's a solid character and a nice backup but I'm "rooting" for Gunnar to speed his way through the minors and be the next

Troy Tulowski!
