Kline and Wilkerson clear waivers

He might which is why he should resign with the Orioles.   The difference between Wilkerson and 50 other guys in AAA is opportunity.    He has a better chance of getting another with the Orioles just based on the fact that they know him and he has ML experience with them.

Also, I don't see Smith as a reserve outfielder but I guess it's possible.    I think he either starts in LF, is the LH side of a platoon, or gets traded/released.

I expect Elias will make 2-3 more waiver claims between now and the end of ST.   Smith himself was picked up last year on March 8 (we traded international slots to get him).

A benefit to not having a lot of talent on the 40.

This is true. That’s why I’m a big proponent of the waiver wire game. We’re not going to participate in FA, but we can pick up players that are coming off deep 40 man rosters and give them a chance.

Keep in mind our current 40 man has two rule 5 players on it and Chris Davis.

Funny!    But I’m glad to have them as depth.    With Kline, we have to keep in mind that even though he’s 28, due to his past injuries he’s relatively inexperienced.   I think he still has potential for improvement.

Yep that's how I meant it... but our talent level is really abysmal

I do like the Stevie Wilkerson story and would love to see Kline bounce back... but man o man this looks like a roster that could easily go past 110 losses

The 40 man roster is an odd way to evaluate organizational talent level. Our organizational talent level isn’t going to increase because next November we have to add 10+ prospects(not names we usually stew over) to the 40 man roster.

We will see massive 40 man consolidation at the end of the year. It’s time for a lot of these guys to produce or get DFAd in November.

Keep in mind that we could take lesser than expected returns on players like Mancini and Givens, and take basically anything we can get  for guys like Armstrong, Fry, Smith Jr, Stewart, Phillips, etc....

3000 PAs over 14 seasons for a grand total of....

1.6 WAR.

That's craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy.

And Seattle actually brought him BACK at the end of his career and paid him close to $6 million over 2 years to do absolutely nothing in 202 ABs! Wow!

There is value in being able to sit the bench for weeks at a time without saying a word, and then going into play a credible shortstop on Tuesday, and RF on Thursday. Especially in a world of 7 specialist relievers and 2- or 3-man benches.

Personally I'd rather have a 6-man bench full of guys who can OPS .825 against lefties and a few plus-plus gloves.  But baseball has decided otherwise.

He's 106th on the list of most PAs by a player with a career of less than 5 WAR.

The record is Alfredo Griffin's 7331 in a career of 3.0 WAR.  Griffin played 18 seasons in the majors and had a .604 OPS, and by bb-ref's figuring was a -28 fielder.  After he turned 30 he had 2000 PAs of a .545.

10+ overstates it a little bit.

I would say there are 3 players that have a 95%+ chance of being added: Diaz, Lowther and Baumann.

3 players with a very good chance (75%+) of being added: Zimmermann, Bannon and Wells.

There are a few other guys with a chance like Pop, Mattson, McCoy, and Hanifee.

Then there are guys that were Rule 5 eligible this past year that could get added: Fenter, Peralta, Sedlock, Alvarado, Klimek, Cumberland, and Muckenhirn

I would be shocked if more than 10 of those players are added, I think it is more likely 8 or so.

I'm not talking about during the season.  I'm talking guys that will need to be added In November.  I'm usually on the side that we think too highly of our own guys, but I remember going through and it seemed like 10.  Maybe I need to look again.

So am I. That is the list of guys who need to be added by December or be exposed to the Rule 5 draft.

Feel free to peruse the Roster Resource depth chart. I don't think there is anyone else with a decent chance unless you want to throw in more AAA relievers like Flaa, Brian Gonzalez or Chleborad. Felix Bautista if he shoots through Frederick and Bowie.

Thanks.  I gave it a quick glance.  For some reason I think I assumed more.  I do agree that we usually over estimate.  Elias has done a good job so far in trades of bringing back players that don't present a 40 man roster dilemma.
