Regarding last night's game, I believe that both angles are true ........

A) l Yes, the Orioles probably got jobbed on the 2-1 pitch to Judge, and perhaps Suiser would have thrown a different pitch if the count were 2-2 instead of 3-1, and maybe Judge does not hit the home run ........ MAYBE.

B) l That said, bad calls are a part of the game, and teams and their players need to roll with the punches ........ and Suiser and the Orioles definitely DID NOT do that last night.

The latter assertion is definitely more pertinent and more important than the former.

Still the O's were one pitch away from beating the Yankees and going  3-2  tied with the Yanks.  That one missed call cost the O's a lot of momentum for a young team in a short season.  Mometum that could carry the O's to a better season.  Umpires should not be game changers.  But last night that guy was.

I'm not sure I buy that at all. This team doesn't have the talent to sustain "momentum" and in baseball, where you have another game every night, I don't really buy into momentum from win or loss.

If/When the Orioles are good again at some point in the future, I think I'd rather have some kind of system that allows managers to challenge poor calls behind the plate just like they can on the bases, with the difference being they don't need to go to video proof, just to the electronic strike zone for the correct call.

I really like this idea. It would add another dimension to at bats. Maybe give a manager 1 ball/strike challenge per inning to start out with. If the call is overturned, you keep the challenge, if not, that's it for the inning.

I believe differently.   I think momentum can give a team a different perspective and  lift a team. A team that believes in itself is dangerous.

As far as the talent on this team,  I am not sure exactly what the upside is with this team.  Alberto so far is turning into a hit machine hit both righties and lefties.  That would be improvement.  Iglesias is embracing a leadership role on the team and hitting as well as playing good defense (when healthy).  Ruiz is showing power vs lefties and righties.  Santander looks good in right field even challenging walls now.  The up the middle defense seems much improved with Hays in center.    I see three starters that could pitch well in Means, Cobb and LeBlanc.  And there are several relievers that could be improved if handled properly..  Mountcastle as another bat in the lineup could add punch.    16 team playoff structure could benefit a team that gets on a roll.

Its way early and a lot of things have  to fall right for the O's to do well.  But that is what momentum is all about.   No one knew in 2012 that the O's were going to turn things around.  Who was Miguel Gonzalez at that point?   We didn't know that Manny was going to be promoted and have a big impact.  If things go right it can turn around quickly.

I am not saying it will. Just that I don't give up a team that shows the effort and is young like this team is right now.

The more I watch the way the game is going and how bad the home plate umpires are now, I agree with this 100%. Why not give it a shot for maybe one game of a series or for one or two series per team?

I used to be against it, but honestly, watching that knucklehead consistently miss pitches and be inconsistent within his own zone last night kinda was the last straw for me to be a convert. Either that or allow umpires back there but allow managers to challenge a couple of pitches a night with immediate computer response to whether it was a ball or strike.

Honestly, base umpires are just for show now anyways since their calls can be challenged.

Yup, what Morgan said is exactly what I was going to say.  For multiple reasons, they should have used this as the opportunity to have balls and strikes automated.

I would have loved to see it.

You could spin it as being for the safety of all the morbidly obese umps out there.

One game has never really meant anything to any team. How many times have we seen a team with a  great comeback one night get destroyed the next and vice versa.  I'm not saying a team that wins or loses a bunch of games in a row aren't affected with confidence  or lack thereof, but I don't think a win last night was going to suddenly change the course of the season for this team.

This team is going to struggle to win 20 games this season most likely and no one win or loss is going to change that.

I call it a reason - and a good one, at that.  Spin, otoh, is what Lowther has on his changeup - which the Orioles front office won't let us see.

    • You mean like spank the yankees a couple times this week??
    • I notice Coby Mayo listed as a RF.
    • Astros admit it is a knee sprain for Yordan and he is out the Mariners series, with hoped for return at the Guardians Friday. He will play the playoffs and I guess benefit from that infielders on the dirt rule, as otherwise defenses might have been able to put all of them well on to the grass like Pujols at the end. Mariners got the must opener with "just" Bryce Miller - now they have Logan Gilbert and George Kirby tonight and tomorrow afternoon against Yordan-free lineups to try and make the weekend interesting.
    • I think a lot of fans frustration (well, at least mine) comes from a combination of this specific team and history.  This 2024 team has been extremely frustrating.  It is factually true that in the last 106 games they have only one walk-off win and only two wins when trailing after 6 innings. They have no series wins against an over .500 team since July 4th, and the worst record in the AL East since June 20. They cannot put together any long winning streaks, they have a real hard time generating a "big" inning, their all-star catcher has had an extremely disappointing second half, and their prized rookies have been far worse than anyone could have imagined.  So this has been without question a three-month plus malaise that feels like it just won't end.  Every time we want to feel enthusiastic or excited, we get shut down by a punch in the gut like Saturday and Sunday. The injuries have undoubtedly played a role, but I don't buy that they should have played this much of a role. Especially not on offense. The history part of it does not relate to the current team, but is a real pain point for fans like me who have been around for decades.  This organization last won an LCS game on October 13, 1997.  Almost 27 years since their last single game win in the LCS. Think about that and how much life has passed since that time.  Over those 27 years, 22 different fanbases have experienced their team in the World Series at least once.  If we go back to the last time the Orioles won the pennant, we can add another 4 fanbases to the list of World Series participants.  I think a 3 game sweep in last year's playoffs hurts us far more than it would Red Sox fans or Cardinals fans or Dodgers fans who are there regularly.  We have far fewer bites at the apple than most other fans, and every opportunity lost just resonates that much more.   No one should ever think the Orioles fans are spoiled, regardless of how much we may complain.  We are among the least spoiled fanbases not only in baseball, but in all of professional sports.
    • Wowww. 4 years in a row, that is damn impressive.
    • He's absolutely right, but of course, anything prior to the 2023 sweep means nothing to this current squad.  Last year we got a glimpse into this team with pressure. We all, including me, pointed towards their inexperience, but now we have a 2nd half of a season with mostly the same players wilting under pressure. Whether that pressure be because of the game situation, expectations, trying to do too much with other players out, or whatever, we have another data point of this current team struggling when it matters. Now, barring a complete a total collapse by the Orioles over the last two series of the year (not out of the question but the that the Royals and Twins are crashing too make it almost assured this team will back into the playoffs), this team is going to the playoffs. This will be the real test because gone are the excuses of injury with Westburg, Urias, Coulombe and Webb back and the team will most likely face another struggling wild card team. That should give some hope that this team will win at least a game, and maybe a series if things go right.  Crazier things have happened before in the playoffs, but only a miracle World Series appearance would be able to overcome this frustrating season and end the discussion over the lack of clutch of this core group of players.
