Roch on the OF situation

The sample size for any defensive stats this year is completely meaningless.  He was slightly below average last year(in a far greater sample size), at least by UZR and UZR/150.  I think he’s average-ish.  He’s nothing special but he’s not hurting you either.

Either way, the sample size is too small and there is too much noise in these defensive stats right now to put any weight in them.

A 30+ HR bat with no defensive ability and low OBP wont bring much in a trade.  Very little if anything, but its possible a team could offer something for him to DH. Just dont expect Nunez to have much value. He has limited value to the Orioles for a reason.

If Elias can get an A league player in return he considers it value.  We have seen that about him.

He is still cheap, so he has that going for him.  And someone has to DH.  But he's a 1+ win player if you just stuck him in the lineup for 600 PAs. 

Remember when the O's traded Steve Clevinger for Mark Trumbo?  Because he's cheap you might get a little more for Nunez, but not a lot.

I don’t think you are wrong.

The Os are just going to play him in other positions to get other players in the lineup.  It doesn’t mean that is their long term intention with him.

FTR, if he can handle first, I would rather see him there, as it opens up an OF spot and that’s where we have some depth.

Because Nunez isn't that good. He's a guy without a defensive position who's been a .250ish hitter with a sub .320 OBP with the Orioles. The only thing he offers is pop but you can find a lot of guys who can hit HRs at Camden Yards. Nunez has also been worth 2.0 WAR in 255 games with the Orioles, basically a 1 WAR/season guy.

You basically just described Santander except he can play average-ish defense at a position that we have the most depth at.

I agree this is going to be an interesting story to follow next year.    Santander, Mountcastle, Hays, Stewart, Mullins.    Diaz and McKenna trying to work their way up.     Hopefully, Mancini healthy and available to play OF if needed but instead playing 1B/DH where he’s better suited.    Could be a lot of fighting for playing time.    

So far this year:

Santander 165 PA, .890 OPS, 1.3 rWAR

Mullins 97 PA, .743 OPS, 0.6 rWAR

Hays 77 PA, .519 OPS, -0.2 rWAR

Mountcastle 74 PA, 1.004 OPS, 0.9 rWAR

Stewart 51 PA, 1.275 OPS, 0.8 rWAR

Still enough time to spread another 200-250 PA among the latter four this season, depending on how the DH slot gets used.    You could get all four into the 110+ PA range if you tried (and Hays returns soon enough).    

Final tallies:

Santander 165 PA, .890 OPS, 1.3 rWAR, 1.5 rWAR

Mullins 153 PA, .723 OPS, 0.4 rWAR.

Mountcastle 140 PA, .878 OPS, 0.5 rWAR

Hays 134 PA, .722 OPS, 0.7 rWAR

Stewart 112 PA, .809, 0.6 rWAR

The Santander injury was unfortunate, but Hyde did a nice job of using the opportunity spread the playing time around.    Now we go into next season with all these guys having had a taste of semi-regular playing time in the majors. That’s a nice spot to be in.

Not sure how much positional scarcity played a part but I think Mountcastle was below replacement level when he was at first.
