11-1 .92 ERA

What’re those, his HS stats?

Comparing his 2019 season to Grayson, both in low A:

Weathers 22 starts, 96 IP, 3.84 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, 1.7 BB/9

Rodriguez 20 starts, 94 IP, 2.68 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 12.4 K/9, 3.4 BB/9

Quite a leap from low A to a major league playoff game.

Just the senior stats of some random former Gatorade player of the year.

I for one am amazed he managed to do well without proving himself at every minor league level first.

The slowest fastball from the Rays staff last night was 94.7mph.

I want to see a modern major league team play by 1884 rules with a pitcher's box on flat ground, with the front edge 50' from the plate.  I know common opinion is that the mound is a big benefit, but I think the strikeout rate would be about 17 per nine.

And while that would be fun for a bit, it's becoming more and more obvious (at least to me) that MLB needs to move the mound back about 3' or so.

It continues to amaze me that you feign confusing contractual rules with appropriate pace of development and promotion.  You and I both know full well that if there were no service time rules and no tie to player compensation that the average time spent in the minors would immediately drop by at least a couple years.

Jim Palmer spent 1964, at 18, split between Aberdeen, SD in A Ball and the Orioles' Instructional League winter team.  He threw 182 innings, walking 190 and striking out 155.  Threw 32 wild pitches and hit another five batters for good measure.  He was in Baltimore for the entire 1965 season, and starting in the World Series in '66.

I agree with that. Especially pitchers. I believe there are only so many pitches in these arms and a good two years of MLB quality pitches are being wasted in the minors for many.

I'm pretty sure that, for instance, Hall could have been promoted mid-season without causing a service time crisis.

    • A question precedes #2: when will the left field wall be fixed?  I think I remember Elias saying they probably went too far, which is quite literally true.  No reason they can't fix it quickly.  I had no problem with them moving it back but it is pretty absurd where it is.
    • On #3, I would guess that Elias is very wary about going longer than 3 years for a starting pitcher (maybe four years if pitcher is younger and AAV is favorable).  I think Mike and Sig believe the history of long-term SP deals isn’t favorable and the wrong deal could derail a mid-market team with dead money.  I’m not sure they are wrong (e.g., Patrick Corbin, Strasberg).   I don’t think ownership cares directly; I would guess they just give Elias an annual baseball ops budget and forecast and he can choose how he manages against that.   Not in play Gerrit Cole Corbin Burnes Max Fried Blake Snell Jack Flaherty    Possible free agent targets Yusei Kikuchi Nathan Eovaldi Nick Pivetta Sean Manaea Luis Severino Alex Cobb Max Scherzer Justin Verlander Jose Quintana Frankie Montas Spencer Turnbull Andrew Heaney Matthew Boyd   Possible trade targets Garret Crotchet Sandy Alcantera Jesus Luzardo Eduardo Cabrera Reid Detmers Emerson Hancock Jordan Montgomery Lance McCullers Jr.
    • Is Webb anything special.  I would rather replace Webb with Norfolk shuttle guy.
    • Our SS is Gunnar, our CF in this scenario would be Cowser, and C is Adley. Hopefully none of those guys are in contention for being the team's worst hitter next season. We don't need a power bat in LF - we need to add a good contact bat, that can use all fields and run.
    • Kemp was part of it but bringing back 2 UTIL IF is blocking your best prospect when your manager covets veteranosity. If they aren’t resigned then Holliday gets a longer leash.
    • LF is a bit of a waste of a spot for #9 hitter.  Its not a premium defensive position so you shoudl be able to get a decent bat who can also play there.  If you're worst hitter isn't an SS, C or CF, either you're contending for a WS , or something isn't quite right.  And this team isn't quite WS contenders just yet.
    • A lot could change between now and then, but right now he's the 4th starter. I like Povich more than most around here and think he can be a solid 4th starter. He may have been command days, but he doesn't get hit hard.  The cool new Baseball Savant chart shows his fastball and curve and have above average movement and is why his slightly below average velocity (.9 MPH below MLB avg for LHP) plays up a bit.
