Terrin Vavra 2021

I've been impressed with Vavra's ability to go the other way and his willingness to just get on base vs trying to hit every ball out of the park. He seems to understand his offensive game from the three games I've watched him.

Haven't seen him challenged in his one game in CF, but he's a little stiff at 2B and his arm strength is slightly below average from what I've seen. I'd like to see him at both more before making an opinion about his defensive abilities though.

Haha, I knew as soon as I saw webbrick post in this thread that it would be used to take a shot at Rutschman.

Never change my friend.

Certainly great to see such a good start from Vavra.  Need as many potential IF pieces as we can get.

You see, when one player is doing well, what that REALLY means is that another one is doing worse by comparison. That's always the most important thing.

There is something to be said for consistency from posters. lol

It's hard not to like what we've seen so far from Vavra offensively.

I guess the O's thought he couldn't stick at 2B - because he seems entrenched at CF.  That's one thing he has in common with Austin Martin, btw.  Still OPSing .922 - not a surprise considering he's hit wherever he's been.  It's hard to see him getting a legit chance with the O's if he stays in the OF - unless they make him a super-utility player in the Melvin Mora mold.

I’m not sure what to make of the recent starts in CF, but I don’t think he’s shown himself to be a lability at 2B. I’m more concerned about Jones’ defense. It seems like positional versatility is important to Elias. Totally speculative, but it could be that Mullins is drawing a lot of trade interest and Elias is looking for options to replace him. Already has McKenna, so I’m not going to sell that theory unless they don’t see him as an everyday player in the future.

Darn, was really hoping to see Vavra stay on the dirt. I’m all for position flexibility, but I sure hope they let the guy have more chances at second. That’s a pretty swing.

A move to the OF isn’t the worst considering that Hays, Santander, and Diaz are always getting hurt.

    • Wieters' bWAR was 13.3 through his first 4 seasons (2009 - 2012).  It ended at 18.3 after his last season in 2020, so he was basically ineffective for the last 8 years of his career. Adley's bWAR is 13.1 through his first 3 seasons. So it isn't like Wieters didn't have a strong start to his career just like Adley did.  I think the concern that folks have is that the rest of Adley's career will play out like the rest of Wieters' career.  It seemed very unlikely halfway through this year, but this has been one hell of a drop-off.   And after Wieters never lived up to expectations, it is definitely a fear that we may be reliving this again.  Let's hope this second half was just an aberration.
    • Adley has been in a horrible almost 4 month slump. Before that, he was the WAY BETTER offensive player. But I pose this question: What does it matter if Rutschman turns out to be worse than Wieters? Matt Wieters was drafted almost TWENTY YEARS AGO. No one in this org had anything to do with him being on our roster. HEck none of our current front office was even here for his entire Orioles' career.
    • I do feel like Adley is out of shape or at least has gotten more out of shape than usual. That’s part of the reason I think he’s hurt…not working out as much. If he is healthy and the slump is this bad, I’m ok questioning whether or not the new GF(ie the distraction) is part of it. Is he putting everything into the game that he should?
    • Can they? - Yes it's possible. Anything is possible.  Will they? - I have my doubts. The team was abysmal (minus Cedric Mullins and O'Hearn's pinch hit appearance) with the bat in their hands yesterday. And for many of our hitters this was nothing more than a continuation/carryover from the second half of the season.
    • Right now Geronimo Gil is better than Adley.  But I'm not gonna kick Adley while he's down.  Let him get a reset, work on some things in the offseason, and hope that this 2nd half ends up being just an aberration in a good career.
    • Which is crazy since they put 7 on the board vs Ragans hitting all singles. They had an approach that worked and then they went away from it.
    • It’s what this board does.
