The Delmarva Undrafted Free Agents

Last year the O’s signed 8 undrafted free agents, and 6 of them made the Shorebirds’ OD roster.   That’s fairly amazing.   Here’s how they’re doing:

J.D. Mundy, 1B: .345/.457/.621, 2 HR, 7 RBI in 35 PA

Dylan Harris, OF: .217/.394/.217, 0 HR, 5 RBI in 29 PA

Thomas Girard, P: 3 G, 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 K’s

Shane Davis, P: 2 G, 7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K’s

Brandon Young, P: 2 G, 6.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB,10 K’s

Ryan Watson, P: was listed on break camp roster but appears to be inactive

I got a look at Ryan Watson tonight and he looked pretty solid. 92 MPH fastball and 81 MPH slider. Think he mixed in a few changeups as well. Big guy (6'5") with a fairly easy delivery. Only went two innings, striking out 4 with one hit allowed. Interested to see more of him. Looks like a reliever unless he can add another plus pitch. 

I did a write up on Young in another thread. I was pleasantly surprised by him....another tall guy with pretty good stuff and a lot of development needed. 

Mundy seems to have only one tool....hitting. He's had a few cringe worthy moments at 1B, and he is not a chiseled athlete. But he has good lift on his hits, good power, and can spray it all over the field. These undrafted guys, mixed in with a bunch of high profile guys (Henderson/Westburg/Haskin) make Delmarva look like they're going to win a bunch of games this year. Side note, but Haskin leans way over the plate and is going to get drilled a lot. Got hit again tonight. They might want to address that!

If ever there was a year for an UDFA to break through, it would be the year after a five-round draft.

We have to remember these are guys that would have been picked in Rounds 6 to 20 or so in a regular year.   Plenty of MLB players come from those rounds.

Well, there are a lot of players who probably elected to wait until the 2021 draft instead of signing for the maximum $20,000 that was permitted for undrafted free agents.

How about J.D. Mundy?   Still hitting .354/.488/.631, with 20 RBI in 18 games.    Another guy bucking for a promotion.

Undrafted free agent J.D. Mundy was promoted to Aberdeen yesterday (and homered today).    Undrafted free agent T.T. Bowens took his place and went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Gotta like that he has 17 walks vs 14 SO's - a much better ratio than studs Henderson and Westburg.

Ryan Watson up to 18 K's in 9.1 innings for Delmarva, 2.89 ERA, and picked up a second win (2-0). Has allowed 10 hits, so either he has gotten lucky getting out of jams or been unlucky on balls in play.

Bowens, who looks the part of a slugger, 3-4 including his first professional HR
