Bunch of Moves on 7/27

Most interesting is Baumann to Norfolk (finally), Rom to Bowie, and Pinto to Delmarva.

Ofelky Peralta to Norfolk is another to keep an eye on, he has been Rule 5 eligible and is somehow only 24. Could still be a big leaguer (likely as a reliever).

Brandon Young turns 23 in a couple weeks, was an undrafted free agent in 2020 and has put up decent numbers at Delmarva, so nice to see him move up a level.

If all goes well for Baumann he could be in the rotation next April in Baltimore. Im curious if the plan on stretching out further Peralta to start as well. AAA has proven to be a big challenge for many of our previous prospects. So this experiment should be interesting.

They've been using Peralta as a starter most of the year and may continue to do so, but I think his future will end up in the pen. they need to find out whether he can pitch on back to back days if needed where he could bring his upper 90s heat. He could be a Tate replacement.

Yep, and considering that he is Rule 5 eligible again this off-season, it would help to know how his stuff plays in short relief (with the AAA/MLB ball) before either adding him to the 40-man roster or risking losing him.

Prior to this season, I had him in the second tier of potential 40-man roster adds, but he has leapfrogged past guys like Sedlock, Fenter, Adam Hall, and Mason McCoy

All good moves. Looking forward to putting eyes on the short right-handed Pinto to see if he's guy or not.

It was time for Baumann to take that step as his command has come around of late. Always interesting when they have to pitch with the major league ball at AAA and how long it takes to adjust.

Young is the most interesting of the free agent pitchers signed last year so glad to see him challenged at Aberdeen.

Rom to Bowie make a lot of sense. It will be interesting to see how his stuff plays against Double-A hitters.

I'm hoping they move Peralta to a reliever role and see how he looks there. It was time to see how he spins a major league ball.

Vespi is really moving and it's clear the Orioles think he's close to being a big league left-handed reliever, perhaps a replacement for Scott or Fry is they are dealt.

The only one missing here is Felix Bautista. While command is still not good, it's better and it's time to see what he looks like with a major league ball against more mature AAA hitters.

I’ve never understood why they use a different ball from the big leagues? What’s the purpose?

Cheap and stupid. I honestly never knew that and been watching baseball for 30+ years.

From what I’ve read, there are also some issues about whether there’s a sufficient supply of the quality of leather used for major league balls.

That is just a fancy way of saying, "the reason is money". There isn't a shortage of cows in this country.

If MLB wanted to open their own tannery or whatever, they certainly have the resources. Surely fans would pay more to purchase beef made with cows that provided their hides to MLB balls.

I only eat steaks from the same cow as Mike Trout HR balls

    • I always compare where we are in attendance to payroll. As it stands our attendance will be 19th in the league and payroll 22nd. The Twins are at 19th with 130 million dollar payroll which is 22 million higher than ours. I expect the Nats and Tigers to spend a little this offseason so that 130 million mark for 19th place may move closer to 140. Still gives this team 50-60 million to spend on either resigning guys or free agents.
    • Well, the changes to the flex plans this year led both me ($1200 plan) and my friend ($2500 plan) to not renew for next year. The decision to more severely limit playoff presale access and dramatically reduce the discount on food and drinks at the park just didn’t make it worth it to tie up that much money in advance. So, we’ll likely go to far fewer games next year. Given the press reports and online reaction, I have to think we weren’t alone in our decision making.
    • Rivera and Soto are hitting.   Holliday and Mayo are not.
    • Holliday could fill the role of pinch runner that Mateo would fill.
    • Yeah. I don’t get that either. SEA would win head to head tie with HOU and push HOU into WC race but it’s irrelevant if the loses don’t match.
    • Regardless of how down I've been about their recent play, there's always been some hope. Getting some guys back in time for the post season will definitely help.    The way this team has been built requires a group effort. I mean,  Gunnar is a huge star, but the lineup when healthy can be competitive top to bottom. I'm not knocking NY here, but if you can eliminate Judge(almost impossible), you stand a chance vs them. I'm not implying that they will go on a deep run because we've seen how bad it can be, but simply saying that getting healthy and having a shot is the best we as fans could have hoped for with the way this season has gone.
    • So who goes when Westburg and Urias come back?   My first cut is Jimenez.   The second is harder.    Liv Soto is the backup SS so I keep him.     Rivera is a good back up at 1B.   He is out of options.   Then there are  Holliday and Mayo.   Both have options. What's a GM to do?
