Well, definitely not since the Chris Davis incident.  And they signed Davis because he was a "fan favorite" and PA loved him.  Most of us knew it was idiotic before the ink dried.

Check out the OH poll that was taken when that deal was done.    Not as many thought it was idiotic as you think.

Point being the Orioles have historically been willing to spend at least to an extent. They have just done a terrible job picking which guys to spend on.

think it is fair to say the the only time the O's were willing to spend was when Peter was owner and even then what he was willing to spend on was pretty narrow.

Sons have only been in control for a short time and started with a tear down.   Can’t really judge yet.

I don’t know, but I’m scared when the team can’t afford Gary Thorne.

Back to the OP, it’ll be interesting to see how much Grienke signs for. I’m betting we would’ve had to pay a big Orioles tax for him to even consider us. .598 OPS in 600 career PA.  Not bad at all.

Especially if he can play SS, for a tanking team--it would be almost worth the big spend (Ohtani-Very Lite):

Quote

As a teenager, Greinke helped lead his team to the Senior League World Series title in 1999. He played shortstop for the team, and his coach estimated that he hit close to .700 in the tournament.

Greinke was primarily a shortstop when he started playing baseball at Apopka High School. He hit over .400 with 31 home runs in his high school career.

Sure you can.  You absolutely can state that they value money saved over putting the best team on the field at the ML level.  That’s not even a question right now.

Will that be the case long term?  That remains to be seen but we know they have valued money over return in trades and we know they have zero interest in putting a better team On the field right now.  You absolutely can judge them On that, especially the idea of valuing money saved over trade return.

The question is whether they’ll spend money to improve the team once it has a reasonable chance to be a playoff team. That’s Elias’ stated goal, to be a playoff team as soon as possible.    He’s made it crystal clear that making a bad team more respectable is not a goal of his.

You aren’t going to go from a 50-60 win team one year and a playoff team the next.

Yardball is on the right side of history on that one.  Thank goodness for public voting.

Unlike you, Yardball didn’t vote until Sept. 20, 2017, two seasons after the contract was signed.    11 of the 32 “terrible” votes came in August 2017 or later.   If you eliminate those 20/20 hindsight votes, only 15% voted “terrible.”    I was in the “worried” category.

So, they’ll have to improve internally before Elias makes major acquisitions.   You can disagree with that strategy, but that’s his strategy.
