I think if Stowers comes up, McKenna probably gets sent down.

I don't think he should be. I would rather have McKenna than two backup infielders. As a pinchrunner and a defensive upgrade over every outfielder besides Hays and Mullins.

Yep, this is the rotation I see that makes the most sense but it's each of them on the bench every 6th game, not 5. And as you pointed out, it puts a pretty good hitter on the bench for pinch hitting duties. When Stowers and eventually Rutschman come up, it should make the offense better overall.

Replace Owings with Martin and you now have some speed on the bench as well as an adequate defender around the infield to include SS.

Yes!!!! Thank you.

Didn’t Tony say a few times about McKenna’s inability to hit fastballs above 92-93? That seems important.

Don't know. But as a defensive replacement / pinch runner, I'm not expecting much with the bat.

Here is a double off a 95 MPH fastball.

I do not think an outfielder with a sub-80 OPS+ is tenable no matter how well he defends or runs the bases.   You can shake a tree and find ten guys who can do those things and still hit at >80 OPS+ and are cheap.

Then shake the tree.  I don't think anyone is against having someone better.   But for now the O's don't have a backup OFer that can field like he does in the large center or left field at home.

Find someone better if you can.

I am curious to see Stowers, but Mullins and Mountcastle sitting one game in six feels like a lot.

The off days come a bit more often if it is just Mancini-Hays-Santander in the group, but I think I like them down 25% of days better than the two big guys down 17%.

Can't find Trey a contender soon enough.

I think Santander needing to spend time at DH is messing things up a bit.

The rotation works, assuming you want all 6 to get roughly the same number of AB's (Hays and Mullins never rotate in as DH though). It wouldn't work if Adley was up though, as he'll also need some of those 1b/dh starts.

Also if you're doing that sort of rotation you want your other bench players either to be IF, or a player who needs very few AB's/starts

I don't think you want a rotation with Mancini in the outfield.

Its a different rotation. One of Mountcastle/Mancini  at 1B/DH and Adley catching two/thirds of the time.   Adley at 1B and one of Mountcastle/Mancini at DH with Chirinos catching  most of the rest of the time.   Except when Adley is given a day off.

Probably don't want Adley DHing too often because if he has to move to catcher during the game it costs the team the DH.

You definitely don't, Mountcastle and Mancini rotate exclusively between DH and 1B when they're in the lineup - but that's part of what really clogs it up when Adley comes up

Did you really point towards one time McKenna hit a 95 MPH fastball successfully as some kind of proof that you are right and I am wrong? lol

In 2021 against fastball, McKenna hit:

Avg    XBA     SLG    XSLG   WOBA XWOBA  WHIF%

.177    .197    .250    .317       .271      .300      34.1

Against 4-seam fastballs

.138    .136    .207    .237      .259      .267     42.2%

And because he has to gear up for fastballs, here's his awful numbers against changeups:

.100   .203    .100    .238      .143      .239    30.4%

    • Baring injury Adley gets more War. Who do you want up to bat in a winner take all playoff game? Who do you want behind the plate with a Rickey Henderson type on first base in a tie ballgame 9th inning? I really bought into the switch hitting Jesus thing with Wieters.  This disappointment (perhaps misguided) led me to really not want to use a 1/1 draft pick on a catcher.   I am kind of wishing we went with Witt.   I think I heard people saying the most important position on defense is catcher.  So how does it compare to SS or Centerfield.   Would you be better off using Rick Dempsey type all glove and arm with light bat or going all in on a 1/1 on a catcher? If this has already been discussed tons dont yell at me I sometimes go months or weeks without posting.
    • Glad Bob Melvin and I don’t see eye to eye on that issue Well said, that make two of us, Bunting Ced down 5-3 with nobody out that late in the game is absurd.
    • Sorry to hear this--wishing you a sound recovery, in time for the O's run to the Series! (That would speed up the healing!)
    • Santander is a good case for the Rule V draft. That's unfortunately the same system that's going to make his next contract potentially look bad. If only he were a couple of years younger. It's hard to commit 25+M to a player at 30+. He's going to be missed in Baltimore, on the field and by the fans, but he's someone that they're going to have to let move on.
    • While I agree and find your comment funny, maybe just say something along the line of”Don’t give up on this team” or “Quite being Debbie downers” instead of assuming they are projecting the own misery in their lives. People might take it better if it doesn’t feel like a personal attack. Either way, that win felt good and I HOPE this is finally the turning point going into the playoffs soon.
    • I've made it clear that if they don't sign Santa and Burnes I'm ok with it as long as the money is allocated to other players they feel that fits their profile better .You know you have people on here like SG who only hears what he wants to hear. I need to learn to ignore that guy.
