Means to Have TJ surgery

The Rangers series brings Jose Leclerc to town, one of four significantly good AL pitchers whose Early 2021 TJ's pair with mid-2022 returns, and who perhaps give somewhat of a roadmap what Means 2023 might look like.    Leclerc is a reliever and had his procedure in late March, so a month ahead of Means' track, plus whatever "easier" premium you'd give a reliever.

The others now in various stages of ramp up are BOS James Paxton, MIN Kenta Maeda and TB Tyler Glasnow.

I'll say it again, if he and Gray Rod could have been healthy this year, I think we are at .500.

Next year, Means, Gray Rod, Wells, Kremer could be a very strong 4/5ths of the rotation.

I need to see a lot more out of Kremer before saying that. We could’ve said the same of Zimmerman after his great start. Also, Means won’t be back until this time next year. And who knows how long until he’s returned to form.

I don't agree with the first part, and I wouldn't say the second without including a word like "hope." But what's happened with the starting pitching over the past month or so has made me think -- and I couldn't imagine saying this two months ago -- that if he's not traded during the season, Jordan Lyles would be a useful guy to have in the rotation for another year. I think it would be important to have a veteran starter, and while Lyles isn't ideal he's probably cheaper or less risky than the alternatives.

Based on the market, do we have to pay him more, less, or about the same?

John Means threw for the first time yesterday.

Says so on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. A couple of reliable sources.

Means was shown doing some light tossing on flat ground, with the caption "Throwing Day 1." His movements were slow, deliberate, almost like shadow tosses, except he released the ball.

This is an important step for Means, who underwent Tommy John surgery on April 27 after making only two starts.

Means' wife, Caroline, tweeted: "This day was circled on the calendar for six months! Proud."

Means will report to the spring training complex in Sarasota after Jan. 1 and ramp up his program.

They can show him loop replays of Zack Britton’s “inning” as an example of trying to return too soon from TJ surgery.

Obviously I'm not saying that Means had one of the above procedures.  I was just trying to illustrate that advancements are still being made.

The most comprehensive look at professional pitchers returning to previous function after TJ surgert

Most players (83.7%) returned to any level of play at a mean of 435 days, whereas 72.8% (P < .001) returned to their prior level at a mean of 506 days.

The study was over a long period from 1974 -2016 and it certainly could be that newer advances may reduce the time .. it would have been interesting to see if the time was trending shorter over that 40 year time frame

Hope so!!
