Who is saying for them to stop stockpiling for the future.  People are asking that they bring up players they already have.

edit:  I guess you could be referring to those who didn’t want to see Trey or Lopez dealt w/r/t the above post.

I have no issue with them gaming the service clock at the end of the year. Especially if they don’t have an opening. A few moves lately have been head scratchers to me. Trading for another poor hitter in Phillips rather than calling up Stowers. The move costs whatever money we gave Tampa, the $600,000 or so left on his contract, and a chance for Stowers to prove himself. His numbers indicate that he’s ready for an audition.

The Hall move is another. His last few starts in the minors he averaged less than 3 innings as I recall (I’m ball parking). It was filled with walks that indicate to me that he has control issues. I don’t see how “preparing him to be a reliever” is going to fix that problem since he can’t see to consistently throw strike 1. Despite having really good stuff he was very predictable because of his control issues.

Not:

Mullins CF
Vavra/Westburg platoon 2B
Rutschman C
Santander DH
Henderson 3B
Mountcastle 1B
Stowers RF
Hays LF
Mateo SS

with one of the 2B and Urias as bats off the bench?

I’m resigned to the fact that Odor is here through the remainder of the season. Urias also imo.

I agree that Vavra should have started somewhere.  We got beat by a pitcher who was on his game.   The biggest problem with this offense right now is Hayes and Mountcastle are giving us nothing and Mountcastle got hit in the hand last night.

They've both been terrible since the beginning of July.  It's actually a miracle we went 16-9 in July with how awful the two of them were.  They are each showing since of life over their last 7 games though.

Always better to have the data than go by memory. So, here's the biggest percentage gains year-to-year in MLB history.  I may have missed a 19th century team or two because my source list only went to 1900 and the only older team I know of from memory are the 1889-90 Louisvilles.

That's a fun table because for the 2022 Orioles to unseat the D'Backs in the modern part of the race, they'd have to add about 20 points of winning pct. from today's ~.518 to ~.538.    That Extra 2% is also fairly likely to cover the space between AL6 and AL7 in the end.

Forgetting the past years and past GM's and managers, I'm going to post my feelings on yesterday's game.

I was on my way to work at 1:30pm when I heard that this could be a tiebreaker game for the final playoff spot, should the O's and Rays be tied. While the odds of it happening are fairly low, I'd treat it as it IS a possibility, and leave it at that.

With Mountcastle hurting, only having Nevin as the backup at 1st, is on Elias.  I'm not saying they needed to IL Ryan, or send someone down/DFA.. but now you know it needs to be addressed.

Having Phillips on the team, instead of a youngster, is Elias' decision as well. I'll never understand the Phillips move. EVER.

I didn't see the Arozarena at-bat with 1st base open.. but if it wasn't a pitch-around, that's on Hyde. Arozarena kills us.

Having Phillips .147 BA in the lineup was the hardest one for me to fathom. What team in MLB knows Phillips weaknesses at the plate more than any other team? Any guesses? Vavra was at minimum a good or (IMO) a better option. Hyde.

No manager will make the right moves 100% of the time.. but when games have just a little more importance, as was the case yesterday..

I also get the "gut-feeling" scenario.. but I get paid to 2nd guess.

Also note, after the game, emotionally, I felt like it was a win with how they finished it. If it'd been no-hit perfect game, it could have been a major setback. Thanks Mateo!!

I record every O's game, because I like watching the games, or just highlights (as well as the low). I wanted to see how the O's pitched to Arozarena yesterday, but due to Comcast labeling the game on MASN Cleveland vs Toronto, my DVR didn't record it. Go figure.

Steady as she go's O's!

    • The O's would have Crochet thru 2026.  They could also give him the Gray Rod rest treatment and then pitch him out of the pen until September.
    • I mean this take is fairly reasonable and I sympathize with your frustration in this discussion. He's not putting up superhuman numbers. He's putting up good numbers that are trending up, and factoring in his age and position, it's pretty exciting. But like Frobby said, he's not untouchable, it's just that it seems unlikely there's a trade fit for him because it would cost the other team someone equally as exciting, with years of control, and who is ML ready. Those guys just don't exist much on the trade market.
    • I hear you but everything seems kind of moot if Crochet and his agent want him on an innings limit. Even if they don't, I doubt Elias would throw caution to the wind like that and abuse the guy's arm. So it seems unlikely Elias would give the White Sox SP-level prospects for a guy they'd be forced to use in the bullpen.
    • I'm thinking there is a good chance Elias makes a strong play for Crochet.  Hear me out before I get drowned out in a chorus of boos.  It seems that Westburg, Mayo, and Holliday can not co exist on the same team.  Too many bodies not enough positions.  That's not even accounting for Basallo (is he more of a 1B/DH) and Kjerstad (same).  Imo, it's better to solve the backlog of prospects before it becomes obvious and the O's hand is forced and the O's have to accept supoptimal value.  There's this little problem of the O's very obvious lack of pitching depth.  O's #1 is Burnes, #2 is Gray Rod, #3 is ??, #4 is ??, #5 is ??.  Yeah I know Suarez, Povich, Irvin and probably Kremer go in there but that's not really a desirable mix.  Crochet pitched another strong 7 innings with 11 K's last night.  He only threw 88 pitches.   His stuff is off the charts.  Statcast has more red than a Freddy Krugger movie.  Makes the O's rotation probably the best in a short series and one of the best in a longer series.  I know Elias is losing sleep over getting this kind of elite talent.  I keep thinking it's better to get a lesser pitcher  and keep the prospects but then I think the goal is winning and as someone said "there is no way the O's can ruin the farm in one deal".  It doesn't matter what I think, is Elias making a bet on this year and trading a guy he thinks he might not have a position for?
    • Then look it up yourself and try to understand. Why does everyone else have to explain it to you?
    • Different spring, different sprain. Same unfortunate result.  I wonder the same year return rate of a “partial UCL tear” as Bautista had.
    • Ugh. I DID. lol. The only reason I even looked at 2 weeks in the first place was because another poster took issue with me referencing his 2024 stat line. So many of you want to argue simply for the sake of arguing....gets pretty nutty.
