Why are we playing double header tomorrow

I was just looking at the teams schedules and us and the Jays both have off on Thursday.  So why did they schedule a double header instead of just playing a normal 4 game schedule.  Is that made by the league or is it a team decision.  You would think we would rather have an extra day of ticket sales instead of single admission double header.  I know the Jays have aN away game in Texas on Friday but you could have an afternoon start on Thursday if need be.

It is a curious question since Thursday is an off day for both teams. The Blue Jays are continuing their road trip and headed to Texas, so maybe them wanting to keep an off day was a factor.

That doesn't make much sense to me because it seems the extra stress on the pitching staff from a doubleheader negates the off day. I don't know how MLB determines in this example why there's doubleheader instead of playing a game on Thursday.

This is due to a rainout last time they were here.

I assume the players wanted a full day of.

I think there is a minimum # of off days that players must have built into the Collective Bargaining Agreement, as well as a maximum number of days a team can play in a row without an off day.

Those could be factors.

Yes, and I suspect at this point in the season players probably prefer the double header and preserving a whole day off.

The orioles actually don’t have any days off from sept 15th until the end of the year, which isn’t ideal

Interesting as we have 1 more game played than some of the teams in front of us.

Blue Jays have a double header today, and then a double header next Tuesday against the Rays.

I'm not sure I see a double header on Thursday happening, especially since the Jays have to travel. If they can play one today, you might see an afternoon game Thursday, or a DH tomorrow. If neither gets played, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the games is rescheduled for that last series of the year.

It’s not just today that’s an issue.  Tomorrow is one as well.

It’s possible that the first 3 games get rained out. Having one or even 2 DHers at the end of the year can’t be something these teams want.

On top of that, DHers seem to get split most of the time, so it nah not be optimal for whichever team is trying to catch the other one.

    • Who cares?  Just win the World Series.
    • This won't be a popular take, but what pitchers are there around the league that teams could get away with paying cash considerations for?  I know they won't be the top line guys many want of this long thread, but there has to be some marginal improvement with some guys who may have some experience who could help us out.
    • I always take a look at this thread.  It's a great gauge for seeing our team's consistency.
    • He's looked much better of late, thankfully.
    • We tried to get Cease from them at the deadline, and then in the offseason. Cease was much less complicated because he didn’t have innings issues and hadn’t been a reliever.  Now we have to make a trade with them with the complications of Crochet and expect not to trade one of Basallo, Mayo, and Holliday, plus.  Yeah, that ain’t happening. Stick to the rentals of Scherzer and Kikuchi. I know it’s taboo to say this, but once you get passed those two SP, who really is that much better than Suarez?  Suarez has only given up 3 HR all year and has a 2.50 ERA.
    • Not really. What SP are you taking off for him?   It seems like our guys reached some theoretical milestones of being an all star but they did a 2-3 deep at each position. Picked the players based solely on that position and not versus the entire position group. For Ex. It was DH v DH. 2B v 2B. COF v COF.  The only gripes are possibly, Westburg vs Peredes but the one player from each team rule.  Santander vs OF but they need guys that can play CF.  Kimbrel vs Holmes maybe here but Kimbrel getting demoted and not spreading out his rough outings affected perception.  Do they still do the last player in vote?  If so, Santa and Westburg could be on the ballot?
    • Well the NFL Rams franchise deserves some mention as they started in Cleveland in 1937, moved to LA in 1946, moved to St. Louis in 1995 and back to LA in 2016.  Fascinating that in each stop they have won a season’s ultimate prize (either NFL championship or Super Bowl)! To add some extra spice to the Rams franchise history they were involved with the Baltimore Colts in what was the largest trade of all time as described here. https://www.nfl.com/news/sidelines/digging-into-the-colts-and-rams-1972-franchise-swap-was-the-greatest-biggest-tra
