I missed the last 10 minutes... But if something happened to Urias, Vavra should be available for offense or defense.

Nothing happened exactly .  He got on base and was obviously sore around the neck, after having missed last night's game due to neck spasms.   But they checked him out and he stayed in the game and proceeded to move to 2nd, then to 3rd, then forced out at home.

So he stayed in the game... but he did appear unconfortable.

And Vavra hasn't played much 3rd, has he?

Gunnar stayed in to play 3rd.

So the pitcher is hitting in Urias's spot.

Well, this move means that the pitcher spot is due 4th in the bottom of the 8th.   So if we feel the need to bring Bautista in for a more-than-3-out save (and he is up), then if we don't go down 1-2-3 in the 9th he woudl have to bat for himself in the bottom of the 8th.

Gunnar could stay in and play 3rd, to rest Urias's neck and keep Gunnar's bat in the lineup the next time through the order.

But that would mean the pitcher would be hitting in Urias's spot, not Chirinos's, and would be a lot more likely to come up in the 8th inning.

Decisions decisions.

If Tate gets through the inning it won’t matter because you can pinch hit for him but if Felix comes in in the 8th you can’t pinch hit for him unless you want to lose him for 9th which doubt you do.

Unless -- when we bring in Bautista this inning, we do a double switch and bring McKenna in for Mullins.  Then they can swap positions and Bautista wouldn't be due until 9 batters into the 8th.

And here it is....

That was exactly my point.   But the double switch solves the problem.   Bautista is now in the 1 spot in the order which just batted and McKenna is in the 5 spot.
