The biggest development of 2023 will be…

A lot of good answers here. I came to say DL Hall is a 1-3 starter, but that's been said.

What hasn't been said is what if Ortiz's bat is for real? It would be amazing to have 6-7 years of gold glove like SS with an above average bat. And to still have Holliday on the come? Wow.

But there are a few guys that could be that guy. What if Mayo and Basallo end up being two guys with 65-70 game power? What if Norby really has a Jeff Kent like bat? Heck. What if Hays plays a full season like his first half last year?

Such as eternal hope?

Injuries, lack of innings, COVID year and stretches of dominance.

And just the general idea that a lot of guys have struggled in their teens and early 20s only to turn it around, especially in an organization that is now advanced (it wasn’t when he first got here) in how they develop.

Calling it an unrealistic expectation is wrong. I think it’s fair to say the most realistic expectation is that he ends up a reliever. That’s fair.  Saying it’s unrealistic that he can harness his command/control and be a starter is completely false.

So many things could go right…just as so many things could go wrong.

Health is #1. They were unusually healthy in 2022. Does that keep up?  If not, so key guys get hurt or just your peripheral players?  Do Adley or Gunnar miss significant time?

How does Grayson look? Is he the top arm he appeared to be before the injury or did what we saw after he came back a sign of things to come?

Have guys like Perez, Bradish, Kremer, Tate, Mateo, et al, actually turned the corner in their careers or are they going to turn back into pumpkins?

Can Mullins be better vs lefties?

So many storylines and so many things that could go right or wrong.

Couldn't it also be completely false to say that it IS realistic that Hall can harness his command/control and be a starter?  I'd say no....because we don't know what future events are completely true, what's completely false and what's.......let's just say, "Posssible."

Can we maybe agree that someone's opinion is maybe "debatable", rather than 'completely false".  And, maybe agree to disagree?

No. It’s wrong to say it’s unrealistic. There have been 100s of players throughout Ml history that have gone from wild to respectable command.

Randy Johnson is a great example.

Unrealistic is a poor choice of words.

Want to say it’s a long shot? That’s a better choice of words. I don’t think that’s accurate either but that’s a better choice of words.

All good answers so far. I think the biggest developments for me would be to lock up Gunnar and Adley with massive extensions.

You have these guys for the next 5 and 6 years.

Your biggest development would be that we have these guys locked up beyond 2028?

Why would that be your biggest development? Is it the idea that the organization is just giving out that type of 8-10 year deal?

We don’t need to look that far back or far away.  Felix Bautista illustrates the point.

I’d say the odds favor Hall improving his command enough to have a solid major league career.   Whether he gets beyond that is more dicey.

The other day I posted an article about Tom House in the MLB forum.  He was the pitching coach for the Rangers/Nolan for a while.  Before a game, he and Nolan went over to watch Johnson throw a few pitches.  A few minutes later, House recommended that Johnson focus on landing his front foot on the ball of his foot (instead of his heel).  Johnson's BB% dropped significantly from that point on.

For Hall:  Freddy Peralta is a realistic hope (with a chance for more).

#1 doesn’t happen if the team is contending.

I'm not saying all, but need a couple to do.  And we were contending when we traded Mancini and Lopez, if you're on that bubble you can justify the move unless they're all star level guys.

    • Very weak.  OTOH, there's still a possibility that Jackson Merrill won't win in the NL.  Who didn't want Cowser to have had that rookie season?
    • Who’d a thunk it? There’s a chance? Almost like it’s a long season. Now if only that Mayo guy would do something.
    • Jeez, it really was a welcome game tonight.  I had a good buzz going...   Now I have to factor in your chronic angst.  Thanks man.
    • If we enter the Yankees series down by three games, we have a mathematical chance. However, we are going to have to intentionally walk Judge and Soto every single AB. The athletics did us no favors tonight.  Still four games out..
    • I know. I'm a hand wringer and a whiner when it comes to this team. I sometimes annoy myself with all this baseball nonsense. But really deep down,I'm still the 8 year old who lived and died with every Oriole game. Still. Im that kid. So when this team was really horrible like for most of the second half, it almost made me nauseous just to watch them lose in all kinds of ways. Then all those injuries in a wave. I really felt they weren't going to make the postseason at all. But baseball is a crazy game, and a light switch can be turned on in an instant. Maybe that Santander walk off HR on Thursday threw a switch. Because Friday night, this was a different team. They still strike out a lot, and Burnes was brilliant, but I feel maybe something is moving. Seeing Coluombe come in and strike two batters out, and Webb, not as good, but good enough with a big lead...and to see Cowser and McCann blast two, and Tony again with a HR...It got my juices flowing. Look, maybe they wont play well this weekend, maybe they will. And then the dreaded Yankees might break our hearts next week. But why think that way now.?Urias is coming, then Westburg, then maybe Mounty, and even possibly Grayson at the end . If we can somehow put the pieces together and get our mojo back, and have the players contribute, we maybe, just maybe, might have a little ray of hope.I still think this roster is talented when all our pieces are together, and as good as anyone when we are playing well. So, I'm not asking for a miracle. I'm just asking for a chance to see this team with most of the pieces together again, and compete.Maybe it's even a long shot, but I am still that 8 year old living and dying for a chance to see my boys make me proud. And these are my boys.
    • Velocity was 1.5-2mph down across the board. Movement was good, especially the sweeper. The fastballs worry me at that velocity though... not sure he should be immediately high leverage in the way he used to be.
    • Nicely done. Lol. Yes I remember that with Minnesota.
