MLB Pipeline ranks O’s farm system no. 1 (again)

The Orioles retain the top spot in the MLB Pipeline Farm System Rankings for the fourth consecutive time between preseason and midseason lists. Since Pipeline began ranking systems in 2015, only one other organization has claimed No. 1 four times in a row, and that was the Padres (2018 pre/mid, 2019 pre/mid). Baltimore and San Diego are also now tied with the most No. 1 rankings with four each; the Rays (three) are the only other club with more than one.

“The baseball world caught sight of what’s coming to Charm City last year, when Adley Rutschman became AL Rookie of the Year runner-up and new No. 1 overall prospect Gunnar Henderson debuted in August. The result: a 31-win increase over 2021. There’s lots more where those two came from as the club attempts to return to the postseason for the first time since 2016.

“This makes four in a row in the top spot for the Orioles, and they keep things going even when guys graduate. Sure, Gunnar Henderson will be off prospect lists soon enough, but an MLB-leading eight total guys in the Top 100 helps cushion that blow -- and they have more who could land on that list soon. Beyond the elite-level guys, this system is still really deep, and the young talent is reaching Baltimore and starting to make some exciting things happen in the AL East.”

The O's will relinquish the #1 slot once Gunnar graduates, but I think Holliday will be the #1 prospect in baseball before long.  Kjerstad might never get to #1 because he's not a five-tool player, but he's my pick to make the fastest rise in these rankings this season among Orioles' prospects.

There may be a better thread for this, but MLB Pipeline just released an updated list with early season graduates removed. Holliday all the way to #3, and Westburg and Kjerstad both on the "highest risers" list.

3 - Jackson Holliday

6 - Grayson Rodriguez (graduating within weeks)

31 - Colton Cowser

52 - Jordan Westburg

53 - Heston Kjerstad

83 - DL Hall

84 - Joey Ortiz

89 - Connor Norby

Hopefully we see one or two younger guys start to pop on these lists (other than Holliday). Theoretically this entire list should be graduated by this time next year, though it almost certainly can’t be in Baltimore for all.

Most of the list should already be in the process of losing their eligibility.

Fully agree!  We’ll be lucky if half of them have by the end of the year in all likelihood with they way it’s going.

I disagree.  My end goal doesn't revolve around farm system rankings.

My view we'll be lucky if Holliday is the only one of those names still on the list.

Its wonderful but I am getting worried we need more pitching.

As we learned, no guarantees with pitching prospects. There is a chance that neither Hall or Grod will be front line starters or may take awhile to establish themselves aka Gausman.

Says nearly every team, ever.

Grayson and DL not withstanding, I'm more confident in our MiLB pitching progress now than I was a year ago.

There is an interesting guy (or two) with upside at every level now.  Not the ideal situation but it’s not like we have zero pitching prospects.

Willems, Basallo, Povich,  Prieto, could make their way onto the list by end of season if they all keep up the pace.   Wagner/Beavers/Fabian as well if they start to pick up the pace and take off.

    • I have two tickets to Game 1 of the WC which I cannot use due to work travel.  Section 352, row 4, seats 9 & 10.  Asking $70 total for the two.  Paid $205 to the Orioles as a season plan member.   PM me if interested.  Paypal preferred.
    • Can't make game 1. I'll be at game 2...last time I was at a playoff game at Camden, we beat Scherzer and the Tigers.
    • He should be taking fly balls all winter.
    • That was a lot of fun. Felt like there are certain elite seasons that had to be part of the team, and then tried to build from there.  Outfield depth is a little shaky, as is the rotation — though the latter is probably mostly unavoidable. The lineup would rake and the bullpen would shove, so pretty happy with this combination.   C 2022 Adley Rutschman (5.4 rWAR) 1B: 1998 Rafael Palmeiro (6.3) 2B: 2005 Brian Roberts (7.3) 3B: 2015 Manny Machado (7.5) SS: 2024 Gunnar Henderson (8.9) LF: 1999 Brady Anderson (5.9) CF: 2021 Cedric Mullins (5.9) RF: 2008 Nick Markakis (7.4) DH: 2013 Chris Davis (7.1) Bench: 2003 Melvin Mora (4.7) Bench: 2006 Miguel Tejada (4.5) Bench: 2011 Matt Wieters (5.2) Bench: 2001 Jeff Conine (2.9)   SP: 2000 Mike Mussina (5.7) SP: 2007 Erik Bedard (5.7) SP: 2019 John Means (4.4) SP: 2002 Rodrigo Lopez (3.7) SP: 2010 Jeremy Guthrie (4.5) RP: 2016 Zach Britton (4.1) RP: 2023 Felix Bautista (3.0) RP: 2004 B.J. • Gray started off well  but then ran out of steam a bit. He's not getting any younger. I was interested in him last year but I think the Cardinals overpaid and his contract only gets worse.
    • A bit. Nothing life changing, but the format seems…Cleaner.
