So, potential starter with a floor of a high leverage reliever?   He supposedly was ditching the change for a split.

I only saw two changeups but didn't see every pitch. Very well could have been a split instead since the first one was buried in the dirt. The second one didn't drop very much but he go a strike with it.

That was probably the best I've seen him throw. He led the game with 13 swings and misses and although the command was not great overall, the control was much better after his first inning of work when he came into the game.

The key here is consistency from outing to outing, but it was a nice start.

Why did he come out of the pen Vs start? Is this just something they will be doing all year with these guys?

Yeah, Bowie has like 8 guys capable of being starters.   Armbruester, McDermott, Povich, Roth,  Stallings, Tavera, Van Loon, and Velez.   My guess is they’ll do a ton of piggybacking and flip-flopping between who starts and who relieves.

@Tony-OH won’t hold you to it, but is there a player comp you see with him?

Let me watch him a few more times before I give out any comps. McDermott's issues have never been quality of stuff, it's just command and consistency. Let's hope he's putting it together because he's a major league caliber arm for sure.

Very good results again - 6/2 K/BB in five shutout innings.    Pitches-strikes 77-44 not typically a ratio that would go with that, but effectively wild I guess.

The hack to get to a Savant-like boxscore with the game ID even when there is no Statcast does give the additional info he earned 14 swing and misses.

I'm sure you have, but one thing to consider on these strike/ball ratios is some of these minor league umps are very inconsistent at best.

McDermott allowed 3 runs in 4 Inimgs today, allowing only 3 hits but 2 of them were homers. Both homers were in the first inning and there was a walk and a wild pitch thrown in before the second homer, so all three runs came then.  McDermott settled down after that, allowing only one single and a walk, both in the 3rd inning.  He struck out 7, including striking out the side in the 2nd inning.  Overall he threw 80 pitches in 4 innings, only 42 for strikes.

The homers today we’re the first he’s allowed this year, after allowing 7 in 26 innings at Bowie last season.
