That would be interesting, and I’m guessing neither party would ultimately do that deal.

The only thing that concerns me about a contract longer than 10 years is that he already has minor back issues.

As the present ownership stands in a kind of limbo, I just don’t see them signing any contracts in that range.  We just have to hope that we have new ownership in 2-3 years before these good young players hit free agency.

Or trade him in 3 years for the potentially greatest haul ever.  Imagine what ME could get for him.

i would rather sign him and make him an Oriole for life or most of his career.  If he stays healthy I think he will be statue worthy.

Keep this party going to 10-12 years.

It's not likely the O's come out ahead in that kind of deal. That's something you do because you feel like you need to, not because you want to.

Whoever you trade him for, you would only have to hope can be as good. Usually you don’t find many replacements for “special” (which he looks to be). Even the cheap Rays know that.

I don't care what the splits say...there's no way I am intentionally walking Hays to get to Henderson right now, even with the left-on-left matchup.

That was crazy.  Hays is like 0 for his last 16 and had a sub-.500 OPS in July.  Overall, I am not impressed with John Schneider.  His decision to leave that pitcher who walked three straight batters in to face Santander also was moronic.

Gunnar is now at 3.3 rWAR, one game short of the 2/3 mark of the season.  He easily could top 5 rWAR the way he’s played the last two months.

fWAR doesn’t like him quite as well.  He’s only at 2.6 fWAR so he’s on pace for about 4 fWAR.  Still, not too shabby.

And, he’s just getting better all the time it seems, both offensively and defensively.

Moronic decisions but I was pleased with them.  Walking Hays was hilarious.

Schneider is the worst Manager in the East followed by Boone.

Gunnar had a huge June, but did so by getting more aggressive and still retaining some swing and miss - he had a 5.1 BB% and 30.4 K%. He was so passive earlier in the year that he was getting pitches to hit and he clobbered them.

In July, seems like pitchers adjusted and Gunnar did as well. He was back up to a 9.9 BB% and all the way down to a 19.8 K%.

If Gunnar continues improving against LHP and settles in as a 10 BB%, 20 K% guy, he’s going to be a perennial MVP candidate. With his defense, power and hard hit rates that’s an insanely productive combination without many weaknesses.

Not a bad idea, but I'm sure Boras would INSIST on an opt out.

Yeah, so.  If he opts out that means the Orioles likely will have gotten the better part of the deal.  Let him go when he opts out.  I used to hate opt outs, but now I generally like them if it is what it takes to get the deal done.
