The Orioles will not win the 2023 WS, and may not make the playoffs...and that is Ok

Sometimes I wonder about the IQ level of some of the people on this website.   Heck forget that I often wonder about the IQ level of the human race in general.

I guess it is the same people who said they didn't want Nelson Cruz signed for $14 M back in 2014.  Which I said was the best signing they could ever make at the time.

Many of you said that was idiotic.

Enough said.

First, I made the OP 45 days ago.

Secondly, I already said they would make the playoffs last week.

Third, I said in the OP headline WILL NOT win the WS and MAY NOT make the playoffs.

For anyone with a brain cell?  WILL and MAY have completely different meanings.

I still don't think they have the pitching to win the WS, but I am VERY happy that they are in the playoffs.

Ask my wife.  :)

You joined in 2022, how were you posting your thoughts on Cruz in 2014 and getting poo poo'ed on the Hangout?

Ahem.  You literally said this on Thursday:
“I hate to say this, but I said it over a month ago.  This team will struggle to make the playoffs.”

You doubled down on the “Orioles will struggle to make the playoffs” argument, which was wrong when you said it in August and was literally ridiculous when you said it on Thursday.  And that’s what we are ridiculing now.

But let’s bury it.  The O’s are in.  You’re happy about it, I’m happy about it, every poster here is happy about it.  So let’s just enjoy it.

Once again, analysis is breathtaking in scope and scale.

Keep it up.

Understand I made this thread over a month ago when I already saw the weaknesses.  It took longer to start appearing but we are seeing them now when there is PRESSURE.

Will they make the playoffs?

Probably?

Chances of winning a WS this year?  Next to zero.

Will they MAKE the playoffs? Probably

That was the answer. Probably means you have some level of doubt.  That drivel was written on 9/15…2 days ago.

Revisiting this post.  I stressed that if you REALLY look at the  O's team, right now....they do not have what I would call a lineup filled with what I would call true star players.  In fact the 2014 team IMO had way more QUALITY players.

Right now the only real star players on the Os are GR....who is still young....and that is about it.  AR is good, but he is not a star.  He is glue.  A player who will keep the team moving forward.  Not a player who is going to carry you to a WS win.  Other than  that?  I said it back in 2014 and I will say it again, the Os had guys like Davis and Nelson Cruz...who I said then and I will say it again.....should have been resigned for $xxx no questions asked.  I got killed on this forum for suggesting that btw.

Pitching?  GR obviously will be better next year imo.  Means as well.  Bradish is fine.  Never expect anything from Bautista again.

They need to trade for a true superstar hitter and a true #1 starter and imo they can and will win it all next year.

Will they make those moves?  Probably not.

In your first three posts in this thread you kept repeating how the team was playing above their “water line”, didn’t have any great players, were not impressed with Henderson (down to .237 at the time), and hadn’t been impressed by the prospects like Cowser, but you had high expectation for next year.   Now you say we need a superstar hitter and #1 pitcher to win it all but don’t expect either to happen.

So, assuming to major upgrades are made from outside what do you foresee for next season, record-wise in the regular season, and chances to go deep in the playoffs?

Well this wasn't even close.  In fact this is embarrassing.

I made this original post about this exact thing (lack of talent) in the summer and got completely ridiculed for it by all of  the cheerleaders here.

If you really look at our line up.  As in REALLY look at it?

We do not have the star players to compete....yet.

Anytime we played a Dodgers or an Astros or even a Rangers?  We were and are over matched.

Stop deluding yourselves.

Dr. Hindsight, I presume? Thanks for that on-point analysis.

Their lack of talent won 101 games, and not only won one of the best divisions in Major League history, but these talentless hacks were the best team in the entire American LeagueThey were a combined 7-8 against LA, TEX and HOU.

Show the kids some love. They made this season fun and the band ain’t breaking up in the off-season.

No, you didn't. You got ridiculed because you said they might not make the playoffs, which was a really dumb thing to say and was proven to be really dumb. You were not right, you were very wrong.

Correct.  It was literally the stupidest comment ever on this board.

Well that is why I made this post.   Give the kids another year.

I said MAY NOT make the playoffs.  A month later I said they will.

I said WILL NOT win the WS.

Do the words MAY NOT and WILL NOT mean anything different to you both?

If not?  I suggest you go back to first grade for your stupid comments.

    • They are wasting way because they are major league ready players who are not on a major league team. They are wasting away because we can’t use them. We don’t have a place for them, but instead of trading them, we are letting them languish. It is silly not to find a trade partner for them. If the value is low, well, the value is low, and you get what you can. I was talking about neither Holliday nor Mayo, and I’m sorry I wasn’t clear enough. but you mentioned Stowers and Norby and you mentioned it exactly the problem that exists they’re not here because we don’t have room for them. I am one of the very few voices who wants mayo to remain where he is unless he develops worthwhile defense, although I would be happy to trade him.
    • Extended forecasts in Maryland are a fool's errand.  💦💨💭🌞 Show up, and pray!
    • I prefer he has to borrow a glove if he is forced into playing defense at all.
    • I think we’ve talked about this, but I would love to replace James McCann with Jonah Heim. Jonah Hime is a gold glove winner and even though he’s having a really bad offensive year compared to last year, he’s worlds better than McCann and would make it much easier to rest Adley more often. He has already been mentioned as a non-tender candidate because he’s apparently expecting a significant raise despite his mediocre season. Lowe might be as well, but it’s probably doubtful that they would move him now. The Rangers, as current champs, are going to take a huge PR hit if they trade anybody but their departing free agents. Half of their top 20 prospects are pitchers, but most have only 40-45 future values. All of their outfielders are scuffling right now, but they are all really good so I doubt they would make any outfield trades, and just hope for some improvement from their guys. I would love to get Robertson and Yates, and I wouldn’t mind Scherzer either. But we don’t have anybody they really need.
    • I have a ton of faith in the FO, but the way the poll was worded, had to cast my vote a little lower.   We won't know for years - if ever - which offers were made but rejected. Grayson has given everything I was hoping for from Bradish.  Burnes has exceeded the hype.  So, we need to replace the #3/#4 pitcher we expected Grayson to be.  Suarez is still a great surprise.  Kremer, in my mind, is trending upward.  A solid #3 would be thrilling. On the reliever front, one solid (non-elite) leverage-type reliever can push Tate/Baker/Akin back to Tidewater and make the whole BP look better.  And Coloumbe returns for the push. I guess I'm saying we don't need an ace and a closer, but a #3 and a 7th inning specialist.  Should be doable.
    • Faith.  I hope he trades all of the prospects that are clearly blocked, and get some players we can use.
    • Hays has certainly hit a lot better lately but he is just feasting on LHP’s. His wRC+ against RHP’s is 73, so he should not be taking any AB’s away against RHP’s from Cowser (or Mullins/Kjerstad/Santander assuming they are all healthy).  So much has been made about Cowser’s offense (for good reason) that it seems like the fact that he’s been the best defensive player on the team on a per game basis gets lost. With his defense and base running value, he doesn’t even have to be a great hitter to be valuable, like Kjerstad. His floor is closer to Mullins, yet it seems like he’s judged very differently. Put another way, if Mullins had Cowser’s overall offensive line right now, with his exit velo’s and quality of contact, nobody would be calling for him to lose playing time. It just seems odd that a rookie that has been so good defensively and has so many good offensive qualities (average exit velocity, chase rate, barrel %) is getting so much heat right now. He definitely does need to be better with RISP and in high leverage situations, and shouldn’t get an unlimited leash, but he’s not going to get better unless he keeps getting chances to work things out. And if he does work things out (as we saw in April) or even can replicate his season line to date the rest of the way, he’s likely the most valuable OF’er on the team.
