It's not the rumor as cited above.  But maybe Rubenstein (as an individual) would be majority owner and Carlyle Group owns a minority share along with the current minority owners.

That was how Peter Angelos bought the Orioles, so it wouldn't be out of the question Rubenstein is coming in as majority shareholder with his own group of minority owners.

Too bad, because Rubenstein is a very impressive guy who would probably be a good owner.

But again, the rumor could be off about a few details.  It could be Rubenstein, who is a main figure head for the firm as the primary guy and could be other Carlyle group investors (they have some big ones) who are also involved in the purchase.

Something could have been lost in translation.

BTW, I doubt this is true. I’m just saying it’s possible and there are reasons to at least not completely dismiss it.

I don't have any inside information, but everything of late has pointed to Peter Angelos not being in any condition to make any decisions.

I can confirm that you reached out to me, but I don't know if this same "source" is being used by multiple people.

could someone provide a refresher on what the implications would be if JA and family were to sell now versus after Peter passes away? I assume there would be major estate tax implications though admittedly dont know the workings of that.

Its an easy google find if you care to, but in 2018, David Rubenstein interviewed Larry Hogan and there was some Orioles banter where the governor answered a question about how to fix the team with an answer like "you should buy it and spring for some better players".

Sorry didn’t mean to imply that the source was the same.    Highly unlikely they are the same.   Just passed along what I heard.  
 

At this point, I’m almost thinking where there’s smoke there’s fire… but we can only hope!   Hell, it would be the best Christmas gift in a long time!

Really? It looks like an investment firm. What gives you the insight that they are willing to spend to win? I'd be more concerned that they are looking to add it to the portfolio of cash cows.

The Carlyle group is chop shop. They have no regard for the employees of the companies they buy. I know nothing about this rumor but they absolutely destroyed the Fortune 500 company I worked for and drove them to bankruptcy… but made millions for themselves. I hope this rumor is completely false.
