A bold and very Tampa Bay move would be to move Adley for pitching and slide in Basallo as catcher in 1 to 2 years

Adley looks to be a .260 ish 20 homer guy that is not  even a great defensive catcher who is already 26

I'd say he'll probably be more like a .280/20 HR guy with above average catcher defense who will have multiple years better than that.

I don't totally hate the idea though, but it's probably next offseason at the earliest before the team considers moving Adley if they ever would.

I think Adley is with the O's through 2026.   He probably averages catching 110 games per season.   That is 52 games a year for Basallo to catch while  learning from him.   Basallo can find the rest of his at bats from DH/1B.

We control his rights through 2027.  It's fair to wonder if we would keep him for that final ARB 3 year though if he doesn't want to extend.  Better to get something rather than nothing if he walks.

I'd say you have a very good chance to get a draft pick if he walks.

Holy Crap, he's had one full year in MLB.  In Mauer's first full year he had an OPS of .783.  Adley was .809 after a debut of .806.

Not sure it's fair to compare a HS catcher that debuted at 21 with a college catcher that debuted at 24.

That being said Webbrick has this odd issue with Adley and has since he was drafted.  He'll spin anything as negatively as he can.

Fair enough.  I would revise my priorities this way:

Trade package worth more than a draft pick  >  a draft pick >  nothing

I’m going to ignore the second paragraph, which is ludicrous.

I do think it would be a Raysian thing to do to trade Adley about two years from now and hand the C position to Basallo.  Adley would certainly return a huge haul.

Yeah, but with the draft pick you also get Adley’s 6th year with the team as opposed to 5 years and whoever comes in the trade.

The thing that jumps out at me with this video is how many of these HRs were hit off lefties. Are Basallo's L/R splits unusual?

2023 season

.844 vs. LHP (3 hr)

.978 vs RHP (17 hr)

Frobby, I have respect for your statements

What is ludicrous?

He is going into his 26 yo season

He did hit 20 Hrs last year in 687 plate appearances

His dWar (BBref) was 0.2 above replacement level

He did hit .277 career .268, so would it not be ludicrous if I said he is a .270 ish hitter

His EV, HH%, LD%, etc are all at MLB average

It is true that I was not a fan of the AR pick, but I believe he is a good not great player that we should consider trading before he gets close to FA especially if Basallo continues to develop.

You're making some true statements but to measure Adley as a player you need to factor in his OBP skills and the typical offensive output for catchers.

That's fair OBP is his ++ skill. I wonder with his general lack of power (EV, HH%) whether he will be able to maintain his BB rate
