Wade Miley

If Elias wants to upgrade from Kyle Gibson without handing out a long term deal, Wade Miley is an option.  Miley has a career ERA+ of 104, but he’s been at 131 from 2018-23.   Those seasons have looked like this: 159, 126, 88, 139, 133, 133, 137.  The only season below average was the short 2020 season.

Now I’ll say that I really didn’t like Miley when he was with us for part of 2016 and all of 2017.  He had a 75 ERA+ for us  and on top of that, I never liked his body language or his demeanor.  But he’s been fantastic ever since then.   He’s a little more fragile than a guy like Gibson or Lyles, but he’s a quality pitcher.   And, he’s a lefty who should benefit from the change in the LF dimensions since he was here.

So, if Elias were to sign Miley and say that was the type of upgrade he was looking for, I’d probably be okay with it.

Feels like an older, LH version of Kremer.  You make a good case but I wouldn’t be ok with it.  I’d rather just run Irvin out there.

I was ready to say...'NO...what the hell are you smoking?', from my memory of his time here before. Had no idea of his recent ERA+, though, so I am at least reconsidering.  If we are going to be severely limited budget wise again, sounds like it wouldn't be the worst choice.

He definitely was bad here.  Of course, we had a short LF fence and an ineffective pitching coach, were behind in analytics, etc.  it’s a different environment.

If we’re on Miley we should just pay the prospect price and get Quintana. If healthy, Wade Miley would be Jose Quintana’s floor with possibly Jordan Montgomery as his ceiling.

I’m not sure what the Mets would want. Buck certainly picked up a lot of former members of the O’s org, but he’s not there.  Maybe some of his influence is still there though.

Hopefully the Cardinals sign him to save the Orioles from themselves. Miley’s really outperformed his peripherals for ~300 innings over the past 3 years. I’m not interested in betting on that again at age 37.

If the Orioles are going to be cheap and only want 1-2 year deals (and they probably are), I’d much rather target someone with upside and injury questions like Montas or Mahle or even Severino or Paxton. Even someone like Giolito or Flaherty who are young but had rough platform seasons could find a light market and look for a deal with the ability to re-enter free agency next year. We’ve got enough options to eat innings now.

Rick Adair in 2016.  Roger McDowell in 2017.

No, Rick Adair preceded Dave Wallace, who served as PC 2014-16.   Then McDowell arrived.  I see that BB-ref lists Adair as the PC both before and after Wallace, but that’s wrong.

So explain why getting a guy with a 131 ERA+ the last five years is aiming low.

I wouldn’t do it just based on his previous Orioles tenure. I get that he has done much better since then, but he wasn’t just bad here, he was absolutely atrocious.

    • They also haven’t announced the times, yet.
    • Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.
    • You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.
    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
