Gunnar batting 5th and moved over to 3B, where he hasn't played all spring.

Nice

Gunnar was typically hitting 5th/6th against lefties towards the end of last year, and he hit 5th and 4th in the two ALDS games against lefties. Not sure that's the plan again, but it doesn't seem unreasonable.

I didn't know he hasn't played 3b in the spring. That might say something about the team's plans (including-- preparing for Holliday on the team). Though if Mateo is on the roster I'm sure Gunnar will continue to see at least a bit of 3b time.

They noticed how bad our offense struggled vs left handers (I.E. Montgomery, Rom, etc) in Camden Yards at the end of last season and figure it will give them an advantage. It's all bout the wall and our left handed heavy lineup.

I think it's just about the Angels having three lefties in their rotation.

Their #3 SP is also a lefty. I would not be surprised to see Nevin and/or McKenna make the roster for that first series.

We could go with a 7 man bullpen, and/or option Wells until we need him game 4 or 5.

Why not matchup?  Every game matters.

Mayo???

Play to win the game - Herm

1. Hays LF R

2. Adley C S

3. Santa RF S

4. Mounty 1B R

5. Westburg 2B R

6. Gunnar 3B L

7. Nevin/McCann DH R

8. McKenna CF R

9. Mateo SS R

If not Nevin then Adley prolly should DH.

Play to win the game,  yet have a lineup with Nevin, McKenna AND Mateo?!?!?!

I think we are overthinking the lefty starter thing. Certainly don't need to be benching Mullins and Gunnar or whatever.

Adley - C
Gunnar - SS
Mountcastle - 1B
Santander - RF
Hays - LF
Mullins - CF
Urias - 3B
Westburg - DH
Holliday - 2B

And then when we pound this guy into sand inside of 3 innings we'll have some lefties in our lineup ready to go for their bullpen.

We have the flexibility for the first series to sort of use and cut loose some RH bats.  Definitely overthinking, but I'm just itching for some baseball and Ws.

I agree with this take to some extent, but I think the overthinking is a result of all the times we saw McKenna and company last year against LHPs. I do have concerns we are so left-handed heavy with how that impacts us against the best lefties. Fortunately, I don't put Sandoval in that category.

I so think Mateo has a shot to start given he's looked pretty good this spring, was much better against LHP last year and was good early in the season last year. I hope we don't see Urias as a starter on opening day. I like the guy well enough, but I hope he's dealt. He's also not great against LHP so if we are going to bench a LHH, I would at least want it to be for someone that hits LHP well.

Great lineup! (Assuming Holliday makes it). If not, Westburg 2B, Cowser, RF, Santander DH?

    • If you "reconstruct the inning without the errors" that means you replay the inning without the ghost runner.   So on that ground ball that got the runner at the plate, you now assume Langeliers would have been thrown out at first.
    • So I looked up the rule book and I can't find anything that says this is the case. Maybe I'm missing it because the rules for unearned runs can be convuluted to say the least. "For purposes of calculating earned runs under Rule 9.16, the runner who begins an inning on second base pursuant to this rule shall be deemed to be a runner who has reached second base because of a fielding error, but no error shall be charged to the opposing team or to any player. For purposes of Rule 9.02, the Official Scorer shall keep records of the number of times each batter and runner is placed at second base in accordance with this rule." In the rulebook under unearned runs it states, "An earned run is a run for which a pitcher is held accountable. In determining earned runs, the Official Scorer shall reconstruct the inning without the errors (which exclude catcher’s interference) and passed balls, giving the benefit of the doubt always to the pitcher in determining which bases would have been reached by runners had there been errorless play. For the purpose of determining earned runs, an intentional base on balls, regardless of the circumstances, shall be construed in exactly the same manner as any other base on balls. (a)  The Official Scorer shall charge an earned run against a pitcher every time a runner reaches home base by the aid of safe hits, sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly, stolen bases, putouts, fielder’s choices, bases on balls, hit batters, balks or wild pitches (including a wild pitch on third strike that permits a batter to reach first base) before fielding chances have been offered to put out the offensive team. For the purpose of this rule, a defensive interference penalty shall be construed as a fielding chance. A wild pitch is solely the pitcher’s fault and shall contribute to an earned run just as a base on balls or a balk." I don't see where it states a batter that reaches on a fielder's choice due to a runner being being on due to error.
    • Joe Posnanski wrote a wonderful book, called “The Baseball 100,” his 100 greatest players. It’s full of wonderful quotes, but it leaves out a quote that is not just all of Baseball in three words, but that applies to all of life. ”Sometimes you suck.” Adam Jones. God bless Adam Jones. Yes, Hyde makes boneheaded decisions almost every game. Yes Mike should have done this or not done that, Yes Cowser shouldn’t have thrown that way, Ryan shouldn’t have missed the fly, yada yada. I was screaming as loud as anyone. My wife said,”I thought you liked baseball,” But now it’s tomorrow.  “Sometimes you suck.” Charge on.
    • Game 4 of Yankees series. It’s one game, but one game could be the difference in the division, having to play in the WC series, and home field advantage.  Things to consider…  How did games 1-3 go versus the NYY?  Should we ease Bradish back in a lower pressure spot so he’s not too amped up for his own good? Do we play matchups and go with a LH SP in OPACY? What happens in Irvin’s start today?
