Right.  That’s the problem and why they keep going to Cano.  We were thin before we lost Coulombe.

I'd pitch Tate or Akin over Cano, even Perez or Baker, probably.

Cano hasn’t achieved consistent movement with his fastball, which really requires run and sink to be effective.  He’s also been hanging too many change ups.  I big part of his turn around last year was dropping to more of a sidearm delivery and his stuff gets flat when he loses that delivery slot.

The much maligned bullpen just outpitched the great Guardians bullpen the same as they did vs the Yankees pen last week.  They have had few bad outings but for most part they get the job done even if they don’t have the flame throwers .  

Orioles pen 10ip 5 h 2er 13 k’s 

Guardians pen 12 is 10 h 4er 10 k’s.

You have to compare this pen to other team pens now. You can’t compare it to years ago. 
 

Cleveland clearly has an elite pen. The Orioles need to add to theirs. That said this pen is not a dumpster fire either. They don’t allow many HR’s. 
 

4th in AL in ERA

2nd in WHIP behind CLE

9th in K rate. That’s the one stat where a power arm or two would help.

Lucky for us Cleveland pitched their best relievers in 4 of the past 5 games. Yes, we did better against their absolute worst relievers.

That's going to make Cleveland a tough out in the playoffs when they should be able to avoid pitching their worse relievers much at all.

Their starting pitching outside of Bibee is suspect as hell. Those relievers are getting abused but damn, they have 4 guys that would be our best reliever most likely.

So... do we need to talk about Cano? Last night he looked like how he did right after we traded for him before he was fixed the following season. 

They have him throwing 4 seamers and I understand why but it's not really working.

It's been 3 straight appearances of ineffectiveness now.

Sure we can talk about him… and then what? He’s not going anywhere so it seems kind of pointless to me. He’ll be fine.

It looks like they are in middle of making adjustments to me or maybe slight injury.  He did get a long rest right before this rough spot that tells me they being precautionary with injury or making some mechanical adjustments. His ball seemed flat and everything was down which now they are using a 4 seamer more to combat lefties and get ball up.  Yesterday although command was awful he seemed to have more movement.  It was also the first time he has just been wild like that.   I would try to get him in more low leverage situations as they work through his mechanics and adjustments.

I just checked, and this season, Cano has a 12.00% walk rate, and many here at the OH are lighting torches and sharpening pitchforks.

Tanner Scott has a 15.9% walk rate and many here at the OH are clamoring to acquire him.

Id prefer someone better, please.

Tanner Scott walked 13 in 12 innings in April and he’s been much better since.  Saw him close against the Phils the other night.  Very sharp.  98-99 with a knee buckling slider and command.

Again, by the numbers, he was one of the best 3-5 relievers in baseball last year and he got better as the year went on.  Looks like the same thing this year.  We could do a lot worse.  And he’s a rental so he won’t cost an arm and a leg.   Bradfield and Vespi for Scott.  Something like that.  Do it.

 

In May and June for Scott.

22.1 IP, 10 H, 10 BB, 24 K.   2 runs allowed.

Does that look like Cano?
