Where did you hear that Elias may dangle Basallo in trade? I have a hard time believing that. He's got to be an untouchable.

I think Just Regular is referencing some clickbait sports media posts on "could Elias trade Basllo" at the trade deadline. I have to agree with you he's close to untouchable as it gets.

There's no way Elias trades a player like Basallo for Mason Miller or Garrett Crochet two players that teams are going to covet going into the July 31st trade deadline.

If they're going to trade Basallo, it'll be to get the haul of the century back. It sure as heck won't be for a rental.

It would have to be a special talent with 2.5 seasons or more of team control left to get Elias to even consider it.

Another poster had a tweet from I think Nightengale (or one of the other national pundits/media pawns) a couple days ago.

I agree he's just about untouchable absent another GM giving TWO major leaguers for a prospect.

Basallo is not blocked by Adley who will be in his 4th year next season. They can split catching duties for 1-1.5 years whenever Basallo is deemed ready to be called up. Then, unless an extension happens, its Basallo's job.

I would be absolutely shocked if Basallo was traded unless that help is team controlled for at least 3 years AFTER this year.

Basallo is going to be an absolute beast at the major league level as an impact middle of the order bat. I still don't see Holliday, Mayo or Basallo getting moved.

Todays media — one reporter makes up speculation, another media source “cites” that reporter, and then it becomes factual sourced material.

Couple thoughts:

1. I can’t see him being traded. He projects to being your second most valuable player on the MLB roster.

2. Plenty of time for this to play out, but I almost wonder if the best plan for the Os is to extend Adley and put Basallo at first long term.

3. Crazy to comp Yordan Alvarez. By crazy, I mean crazy awesome!

My head explodes thinking about Jackson, Gunnar, Adley, Mayo and Basallo in one lineup…plus Westy and Heston and Cowser and maybe Bradfield.

I do have questions about Basallo’s progress as a catcher.   By my calculations, the Baysox have allowed 5.68 runs/game when Basallo has caught (25 games), 4.11 runs/game when others have caught.  We know that stats like CERA have a lot of noise in them, especially in a small sample, but 1.57 runs/game is a huge margin.  He’s also committed 4 errors and 4 passed balls in 25 games at C, and has caught only 22% of runners (8/36).   By comparison, Silas Ardoin has started 31 games at C and has only 2 errors and 2 PB, and has caught 40% of runners (16/40).

These are all superficial numbers, but they raise questions in my mind and I’d need someone who watches Basallo a lot and knows how to evaluate catchers to tell me how he rates behind the dish.

    • Santander has an OPS+ of 128 and a wRC+ of 125. In other words, at or near his career peak, and better than Cal or Brooks' career marks. A 128 OPS+ would be Nick Markakis' second-best offensive season.
    • Just as importantly they used baseballs where they'd replaced the cushioned cork center with Flubber. There's almost no way that sometime in early 1993 the entire league suddenly decided to use industrial quantities of 'roids AND started to work out like madmen so they'd take effect. In 1992 the majors scored just over four runs a game, and by mid-1993 it was about five. Not to rehash that entire argument for the 10,000th time...
    • I tend to doubt Pitt trades Keller but I think Bednar could be on the board. He hasn’t even the lights out guy so far that he has been in the past. Mountcastle and other make them a better offense and perhaps team right now.
    • Because I believe how it works is they project FIP and then adjust based on team defense and park factors to project ERA. Since we’re talking about a trade, the context-specific elements of defense and park factors are less relevant. The projections have been shown to be more highly correlated with future performance than ERA or ERA estimators such as FIP.
    • Wait …what . Cedric has hit for .271 and .290 in his career. And I could also live with the .258 he hit a couple seasons ago.
    • I'm happy that I made it through yesterday intact but look ahead...there are thousands of viruses floating around out there, and it might thunderstorm this weekend...I feel there's a solid chance I get struck by lightning at least twice...my "health" will likely be short lived...but I'm happy to be alive...for now..
    • Pittsburgh signed Keller thru 2028.  As much as I would like to trade for him, I think they plan to build their rotation around Keller and Skenes.  Keller is a #2/3 with ace upside.  If their GM would think to move him, they would no doubt want a package starting w/ Mayo/Basallo or Holliday, fair or unfair.
