Heyman: O’s Acquire Julio Teheran on minor league deal

Recommended Posts

In between his ST with us and now, he allowed 4 runs in 2.2 IP in the one start he got for the Mets. Then he got 8 starts with the Cubs AAA team where he pitched to an 8.82 ERA. 😬

I'm onboard for this. They saw enough in spring training to have interest, but didn't want him on the big league roster. He's a good depth gamble. Maybe they have an idea of how to get him to be effective. He was serviceable in a small sample last year after all.

I disagree with folks that are saying the Orioles need starting pitching. They need relief pitching and the injuries to Means and Wells certainly ate up depth so they need depth as well. But Burnes, Grayson, Bradish, Irvin and Suarez isn't bad, particularly with Kremer likely back in not too long. But what comes next if there are futher injuries is the concern. Povich was amazing in April, but hasn't been as good since, particularly given his last start. I still believe in him long term, but its not the clearly ready option he appeared to be in April. I don't mind another potential fill in option in AAA if the Orioles can get him back to his 2023 Milwaukee form. It's not great. Nor a Plan A or B, but an extra break glass in case of emergency option.

Is there anything in the recent history of the Orioles' front office that would make you think anything remotely like this is what's happening? "We just built one of the great farm systems in baseball history and turned a 52-win team in arguably the best team in the league, but we really can't tell a starting pitcher from a dead armadillo."

Nice to see that most of the board is sane.  Of course, Heyman's initial misleading headline doesn't help matters.

Teheran is desperate.  He just bombed out of AAA.   Zimmerman’s on the IL and Armbruester maybe needs to clear his head in the bullpen.   He’s filler at Norfolk and listed under “it would take a miracle”.

As long as he has to earn his way to the majors.  I assume he has an opt out date.

He's good at opting out.   He opted out from us at the end of spring training..   Mets signed him, started him once, he didn't do well, and they DFA'd him.   The Cubs signed him to a minor league deal and he has an 8.82 ERA in 8 starts for them, and it had  June 1 opt-out date, so he opted out of that too.

They sure plopped Thyago Vieira into the pen without a second thought, and he is definitely a dead armadillo, so the concern is not groundless.

edit: I’m not sure what’s confusing about that comment, the man was terrible(ie a dead armadillo) and they put him on the 26 man anyway, so the concern was not groundless. I don’t know what’s confusing about that, maybe I should use words with fewer syllables.

    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
    • Scherzer still looks like a guy who would be a nice add to our rotation in the second half if the Rangers are sellers.
    • Not happening. I don’t disagree, but Kremer will be slotted in the rotation.
    • I wouldn’t either but the word here is that he’s going back to rotation . Suarez supposedly the one  to be moved to bullpen . I think they should wait and see if Irvin can rebound . If Irvin can’t match Suarez’s work, then he should be moved to bullpen
    • Yes that’s what I was asking. COC was completely off base in his comment. Judge is a great player, and apparently a nice guy. I have nothing against him, or most Yankees, for that matter, though Gil’s tats are off putting. I am expecting a bit of pro Yankee bias, but that’s ok. Also, home runs is a very glittery stat, and might sway some folks. But it should be Gunnar, at least based on the first 81.
