MLB Ump Pat Hoberg Disciplined For Violating Gambling Rules.

It’s hard to comment without knowing the specific allegations involving Hoberg.   All I will say is, it’s just a matter of time before there’s a major scandal where the integrity of games is compromised or called into serious question.  And, I’m not sure there’s anything that pro sports can do about it now.   Whether or not they “embrace” gambling, the legislation enabling it everywhere has made it so ubiquitous that a player or ump/referee is bound to get in over their head eventually.

I personally find it difficult to be be empathetic for baseball players/umps/staff who violate Rule 21. 

If they are motivated by thinking they have inside knowledge, or that they can manipulate the results...  both of these are inherently terrible. 

If they just want to gamble for the thrill and fun of gambling, then they are absolute morons, because there are about a billion non-baseball sports and events to choose from.

Even gambling on other sports is dangerous, because if they get in over their heads, there’s the temptation to get out of the hole by influencing or using inside information from their own sport.   Many gambling scandals have started exactly that way.

So if the umpire bet on baseball does he get a lifetime ban too, or is that just for players?  Who could have predicted that mixing gambling and baseball so closely could cause problems?

Word is bet on baseball it's a year.  Bet on a game you are involved with it's lifetime.
