If this is true, then Mike is shooting low indeed. In @Greg Pappas poll, I voted for nothing meaningful to happen.  If this is something Elias is exploring, I’m deeply disappointed even despite my low expectations.

Montas is terrible.

They might be thinking about moving him to pen.  His numbers are pretty good 1st time through.  .203 average and .659 OPS.  Then get worse 2nd and 3rd time through.  Maybe let him pitch out of pen air it out and he throwing 97-99.

We don’t want someone marginally better than a prospect who has been thrust into the rotation.

we want someone better than our current #3. Montas is awful. His WHIP is close to 1.4, his FIP is over 5. Whether he’s better than Povich is debatable, but so what? We want someone good, not someone who sucks a bit less than our worst.

And if Mike thinks that would be an adequate use of our resources, then he’s indicating a lack of real interest in improving the roster.

If all you ever do is Buy Low and Sell High, transactions mostly won't seem that exciting the moment they occur.

That said, Corbin Burnes was not in the spirit of that "always be arbitraging" and gives me some encouragement at the end of the day Elias will pay sticker price for the good stuff.

This is like when you have to pretend to not be interested in the used car you are trying to get a deal on.

I think Montas is interersting. It’s been a while since he’s been good, and he got shoulder surgery. But I don’t think he’s velo is diminished. Maybe he could even go to bullpen in playoffs. Just wouldn’t want him to be our only starter acquisition.

This makes sense to me. Elias is basically telling all of his trade partners that they are not his only option. This is all a game of high-stakes poker. My only concern is he has never acquired an impact player for prospects at the trading deadline.

This deadline is Elias' first real test to see what he's willing to part with and what he can get in return. Everyone knows he needs at least one impact starter and probably one impact bullpen arm. If he can pull that off without giving up any of the big-3, that would be a miracle.

Detroit is asking for the farm for Skubal. Cowser might not be enough for Fedde. Heck, Getz might be asking for one of the big 3.

I have to believe this would be the strategy if they acquire him.

If Cowser’s not enough for a career 4.93 pitcher then the Orioles need to hang up the phone.

So we’re judging Fedde off of 2021 and 2022?  Well you’re not gonna like what Crochet and Skubal did those years.

      Some might call it arrogance, others might call it resolve. I think it's as simple as identifying a problem/situation, analyzing it to the best of your ability and that of the resources at your disposal, reaching a conclusion, and sticking to that decision. Beyond that, Elias will learn when and how to adjust as he gains experience in the #1 chair.  Honestly, I don't even have any gripes with him at the moment. We all wanted Holliday up, then he stunk. Then we all wanted Mayo up, then he stunk. So who are we complaining about now? I can't even keep up. Not to derail, but it's the same unfair criticism that Hyde is facing on this board. Manager and GM sure have become thankless responsibilities around here. And I know how you all talk about Harbaugh on the football board, too. I'm not apologist for any of them, but I do admire the fact that they've been able to build a championship-caliber club and maintain it through all of the injury adversity we've faced. This board is quick to point out mistakes, but is terrible at giving credit where credit is due, and having the most wins in the American League as we sit here on September 6 deserves a bunch of credit.

      Great example, even if we only kept him for part of the season.  Holzman was one of those guys whose success defined explanation, especially by current standards.  He went 5 - 4 for us with a tidy 2.86 ERA... but he allowed 100 hits in 97 innings and allowed more walks (35) than KOs (25).

      I live in California and prices for games in SF and Oakland change day-to-day. That is just normal in 2024, any price is only the price at the moment.

On one hand, Cashman was willing to go public with management disagreement about whether to call up Dominguez and is personally(along with Aaron Boone) taking responsibility for not doing so, so kudos for that. On the other hand, he didn’t really give any reason for not making the change, so we’re left to just assume that it is stubbornness or ego. Over in Baltimore, Elias has, arguably, made similar mistakes. I share because I think this illustrates that, individual skills and talents aside, every GM suffers from a certain arrogance that renders them unable to admit a mistake or to address it in a timely or effective manner. after several years of remaking, the organization, for which Elias deserves much praise, he’s now in a different phase, and that phase is addressing problems and maintaining the success of the last couple of years. And that’s much more difficult. We can only hope that he makes adjustments as necessary.
