Minnesota: 18-2 against OAK and CWS, 44-46 against everyone else

KC: 16-3 against OAK and CWS, 47-47 against everyone else

As we’ve seen for the O’s, it’s not always easy winning against bad teams, but I thought it was interesting seeing these numbers. They’re also a combined 52-65 against teams over .500. They’ve pretty much taken advantage of a historically bad CWS team in their division to be in WC spots.

The Royals have a brutal stretch coming up in few weeks.  They have 23 straight vs teams over .500 with Phillies, Guardians, Astros, Guardians, Twins, Yankees, Pirates.

They do. Huge series for them tonight.

I really think Orioles related if they can stay tied or so by end of August I like our chances.

Those records are absolutely insane.

Os have 3 more v CWS, none against OAK, but 3 against COL.

NYY have 3 more each v CWS, OAK, COL.

On paper, it seems that NYY have easier August schedule. For Sept, I think Os gets a bit easier, esp if DET starts mailing it in.

Pretty good day for the Orioles in the standings.  Orioles win, Guardians loss(they are in free fall) so gain game on home field advantage.  Red Sox lose so that drops them 6.5 back and Royals lost so gives them another loss.  That makes magic number to make playoffs 39.  Only thing that would have made it perfect would been Yankees loss instead of rainout.

Rangers continue their poor play, sliding further under .500.  They're only kept in the playoff picture by the continued mediocrity of the Mariners and Astros.

Yankees play a DH tomorrow. It’s hard to sweep a DH, so I’m expecting a split. Burnes is throwing for BMore so unless the defense plays hacky-sack again, we’ve got a good chance.

First team in MLB to 70 wins tonight. For as bumpy as it’s been for the last 5-6 weeks, we are still on top. I think we are about to really take off here soon.

The defensive muffs are starting to quiet down, especially for Gunnar.  I am expecting a strong finish.

Unfortunately we have Albert, Rogers and Kremer next 3 games.  Maybe we can get some rain so Efflin and Burnes can pitch again.  12 and 10 since all star break.  Burnes starts 5-0, Efflin 3-0, GRod 2-1 so 10-1 on our top 3 but 2-9 all everyone else.  Maybe Big AL and Kremer can join te party some.

Yeah, we 'll take off as long as Burnes and Eflin pitch..otherwise its a total crap shoot.

    • My current confusion is that I thought Mayo would be in that first category, but it has been the second. I guess it shows what they think of his defense, which I get, but… the Mountcastle and Urias injuries should have been enough to bump Mayo to everyday status. Instead we are giving Eloy all this time, even though Mayo seems like a higher upside play.
    • I seem to recall Eloy being in there against quite a few righties of late  He also has reverse splits over his career, so using him as a strict platoon guy against LHP makes little sense.  May be reading too much into the L/R thing when we are fielding everyday lineups with Rivera, Jimenez, and Slater.  We just need better players.  Kjerstad has shown the ability to hit both lefties and righties in the minors.
    • Yep. In the offseason, I said they had to trade one of Mateo or Urias and 2 of Hays, Mountcastle, Santander, OHearn, Mullins or Santander.    If you do that, are you really any worse off right now?  Maybe if Santander was traded but it depends on what you got back and how the replacements filled in for him. The slugging and power is great but average at best defense and a 308 OBP isn’t tough to replace. This team holding onto so many mediocre vet guys all in the name of “depth” just doesn’t sit well with me. I think it has hurt the team.    You can always acquire depth. Depth is in abundance. Talent is not. You don’t forgo talent for depth.
    • Completely fair. I just think some people were hyped up about Adley’s power surge the first few months even though there were some issues under the hood. Not to this extent, but there were some problems.
    • This is going to be even more of a concern for 2025 in my opinion.   There's really not a lot to pull from in the minors, most likely losing Santander and Burnes plus some.   Kjerstad is a question mark because he's never been given an opportunity to get a months worth of AB's because of usage and injuries.   I'm just doom and gloom right now because the last couple of months have been really disappointing. It's going to take some decent money this off season to address some of the needs, and I'm hoping ownership will be willing. I'm also hoping Mr Elias will be willing to rely on outside talent that's a bit better than the stop gaps that we've seen so far.
    • This correct. https://trace.tennessee.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1426&context=jasm There are other factors, of course, certainly school has started and that has an impact. But I reckon the Orioles just puttering along isn't helping things. It'd be different if they were performing like they were to start the season. But the team currently looks like the 2015 Orioles (a .500 team) than the 2023 Orioles (or first half 2024 Orioles, for that matter).
    • Yep. You know my thoughts on all of this and it is frustrating. Even not dealing guys like Mountcastle, Hays or O'Hearn this offseason to make space for guys was short sighted.  Besides Gunnar, Adley and Holliday, and Westburg to a lesser extent, none of the other prospects like Ortiz, Kjerstad, Cowser, Norby, Stowers, and Mayo were given everyday opportunities from the start. When they did play them, they have a nice game and instantly be back on the bench for days at a time. Cowser finally forced the issue by having that strong start and good defense, if he had struggled at all, Hays would still be in LF. Ortiz or Westburg should have been the starting 2B last year when they wasted money on Frazier. They came into this year with Cowser and Kjerstad needing everyday PAs, but instead brought their entire outfield back.  For a team that has been drafting college hitters mostly, it does seem weird that the offense stinks and they have to employ the likes of Jimenez, Rivera and Maton and the only prospects they had ready have really struggled, one of which Mayo is getting the backup experience.
