He also smartly alleviated some 40-man crunch with Johnson, and Chace being Rule 5 eligible this offseason.

Very good points here, among other good points in your post.

thought Johnson was already on the 40 man

He was, exactly.  So he’s taking a 40-man spot but not ready for the majors.  Then by 2026 he’ll be out of options, which really limits his utility to us unless he’s very good, which seems dubious.

Yes I get all of that, part of the reason he was traded, but he would not have been Rule 5 eligible

Soto 5.1 BB/9

Johnson 4.8 BB/9 (in AA)

Chaco 5.2 BB/9 (in A*)

Which one are you having trouble getting excited about?

Has nothing to do who we gave up.  He's just another unreliable arm this year. I wanted an upgrade for this year.  Yes we have him for more than one year and can maybe get him right next year.  But for this year we should have aimed higher.

Genuine question. Is there anyone on OH who thinks Soto was a good pickup and if so, why?

He is 29 has electric arm with lots of strikeouts.  He has as many walks this year as last year in almost half the innings but the velocity has been about the same.  That tells me there most likely is a mechanical issue and not a lack of stuff.  If you can get that straightened out you have a great pack end piece.   He had a 3.41 ERa just last week but now two blow ups has it over 5.  He had given up 2 runs in his previous 18 appearances before that.

Fujinami 2.0 — wether he pans out for us or not is tbd

Fuji had a half season and 34 games in the majors with no success and ERA of just under 9.  Soto has 6 seasons 300 innings and 298 games as a former all star with decent ERa of 3.41 before last two outings.  The only similarities is they play baseball and can throw it fast.

And they are sucking since the O's traded for them.
