Orioles, Matt Bowman Agree To Minor League Deal

Think my worry with Bowman is he walks more than you'd like and doesn't strike out many. Yeah, he'll probably make around ~$1.2-$1.5m in arbitration, but would you want him taking up a roster spot with a SO/BB ratio of ~2? He's essentially a right-handed Cionel Perez without the illustrious ability to limit homers. Basically the definition of a late year acquisition.

He only has about eight innings with the Orioles, but the only time he had a walk problem was when Hyde pushed him too hard and he threw 42 pitches, including walking the last two guys he faced, long after he should have been taken out.

So I am happy to give him a Mulligan on that one.

I know it’s the smallest of small sample sizes, but I guess I’m so sour on everybody else in the pen, and so many of the guys we brought in have either been awful or, like Nittoli, were dumped after just a few innings, I’m just hoping this guy will be worth keeping.

But so far for the Orioles, he’s been splendid.

And he’s got an amazing sweeper. Boy did we see some fantastic pitches from that arm.

I look forward to seeing more of him and less of Perez.

It’s kind of amazing, but Bowman has thrown 207.2 innings in his career, while Perez has thrown 207.1.   Perez has allowed fewer hits (183/188), fewer runs (101/105), fewer homers (15/18) and has struck out more batters (191/167).   The only place where Bowman has the advantage is walks (108/75).  Perez is five years younger.   I prefer Perez every day and twice on Sunday.

That’s a very interesting post, as are most of yours, but if you look closer, at this season, specifically at the Orioles season, specifically at the last seven innings by each pitcher, I think Bowman has done better…
🙂
I still hope that Bowman is with us for the rest of the season, and on the playoff roster.

And I hope that after the playoffs, it turns out that he was a net positive for the team.

I gotta admit, I’m pretty pissed at Bowman for turning a laugher into a stressful ending.  I won’t shed any tears if he’s not on the playoff roster.

He had built up some good will with me but I agree with this sentiment. Not the outing that you want if you’re trying to make the playoff roster. Turning back into a pumpkin pre October.

I was disappointed, but this is the only really bad appearance he’s had with the Orioles, so I would still rather have him than Baker

A litmus test is if you'd prefer Trevor Rogers back for last guy.

Tell me if it sounds crazy, but a pitcher you can sign to a minor league deal in mid-August might not be competitive with the world's greatest hitters in late September.

It is fun to curate a trick pitch that works for a minute.

I may be misunderstanding, but if you are suggesting that you would recall Rogers for the playoffs, then I must respectfully and strongly disagree.

Baker is odd man out here, or maybe Smith, but I would definitely keep Bowman

The pitch to Judge was just the Judge tax.  That was a pretty good curveball.

Rizzo was bad luck.  But you gotta get at least Torres out there.  And then Soto hits a liner too.

The pitch to Judge was not good, and really no pitch to Judge is good if it’s the 5th or 6th pitch with mediocre stuff. But yeah, the problem was the other batters, you can’t face Judge as the 5th batter of the inning, that’s a recipe for failure.
