@Sports Guyis right, its very clearly the injuries.  And as he's alluded, that manifests itself in more ways than just 'this guy isn't here now and his replacement kinda sucks'.  It also plays out with guys getting more AB's than they normally would and getting exposed, so their overall performance is affected as a result.  O'hearn is the obvious example - he had almost none of his AB's vs lefties in the first half, and has had many in the second because there's no one else to play 1B other than Rivera, and he has to play third because Mayo has been so bad and Urias is not available.  So that's the Urias/Westie/RMC injuries affecting O'hearn, maybe significantly so.  How much better would Holliday look if they were able to pick spots to sit him while Urias, Mateo, or Westburg played second?  So that's the Urias/Westie/Mateo injuries affecting Holliday.  Maybe Gunnar even gets a couple of extra days off w/ Westburg or Holliday taking a day at short.  And this is before you even factor in the defensive decline we've seen at second and short - is that affecting Gunnar's D?  Even if it isn't, its definitely affecting the pitchers, and the win column - look no further than game 3 in Boston last week to see that.  If Mateo is on the field, that game ends 3-2 Birds, I'm convinced of that.

The one major thing that the injuries simply cannot explain away is Adley's cliff jump.  IF that isn't an injury itself - and they've insisted multiple times that it isn't - then I got nothing to explain what's gone on w/ him.

And I said this before but I'll say it again.  IF they were to move on from Hyde, it would be Buck Britton, and I don't think there would even be a search beyond him.  I thought Gunnar picking him for his HR Derby pitcher spoke volumes about the respect these more recent AAA guys have for Buck. How many played for him down in Norfolk, at least for a bit (some for a good while)?  Gunnar, Cowser, Adley, Holliday, Mayo, Westburg, Kjerstad, Basallo (since we're talking next year, that's possibly relevant), several pitchers.  Its the core of the team.

It would be the only move that I could see MAYBE happening - Hyde for Britton.  But I still doubt that very much.

What lack of hustle are you talking about? You may see a lack of hitting but point out where that translate to a lack of hustle by anyone on this club.

I've seen it multiple times on ground balls with Jimenez and Slater. I believe it was Jimenez last night.

My favorite part about this team might be Gunnar's hustle out of the box. He puts pressure on teams. Did so a couple of days ago on a routine grounder to 2nd. Cowser won a game by beating out a play at first a couple of weeks ago.

Then new guys came in and it's like they brought their culture. I could be reading too much into it, but I need a manager to step up and shut that down.

Someone on another thread mentioned a Dusty Baker/Ron Washington type. I would hate that.

Tbh I  wouldn't mind either one myself but Washington is with the Angels. Who knows maybe Dusty can be like Brice Broche and win here like he did in Texas last year. David Ross may deserve another shot.

The offense didn't collapse because of losing Mateo and Urias.

The culprits in no particular order:

- Norby being traded when he was sorely needed for depth. Elias was reckless to give him away when an injury to any of Westburg, Gunnar, Holliday, Santander, Cowser, Mullins would have opened up regular playing time for Norby, and Norby should have been playing more before he was traded anyway, especially given this team's unbalanced makeup in favor of left-handed hitters. I've been advocating for Norby playing more all season (including over Mateo at 2B), even saying mutliple times and at multiple points in the season that he should have made the Opening Day roster over Tony Kemp.

- Adley cratering to be one of the literal 5 worst hitters in MLB for a stretch in the second half, perhaps due to injury.

- O'Hearn collapsing in the second half for a 2nd straight season. I criticized Elias for both bringing him back to block other younger players at DH (Norby, Kjerstad, Mayo) and also for not selling high on him and trading him prior to the deadline.

- The Eloy acquisition being a waste of time and waste of the DH spot when he starts, as I also stated at the time the trade was made. Eloy has sucked hard for the past month, and he should be released next.

- Santander is a streaky and fairly one dimensional hitter. When he's not hitting home runs, he doesn't add much value in terms of reaching base. He cooled off considerably right around the time the offense sunk to a new low over the most recent few weeks. Gunnar can't carry the offense by himself when Adley and O'Hearn have been sinking the lineup in the top 4 spots most of July, August, and September.

I appreciate the well thought out response. You’re right on a lot. I’m going to have to disagree with you on Norby. If you polled the board at the deadline and said we’re rolling with Holliday at 2B, and Mayo at 3B, for the rest of the season not matter what, 99% of us would have said “let’s go”.

Elias also didn’t give Norby away. Norby bought what Norby could buy. If his market was better, and other GMs valued him, then we would have Kikuchi or Fedde here instead of Rogers.

We have Kjerstad in the lineup tonight. So by my math we have the,

2019 #1 overall pick in Adley

2020 #2 overall pick in Kjerstad

2021 #4 overall pick in Cowser

2022 #1 overall pick in Holliday

2019 1A pick in Gunnar

2021 5th rd pick in Mayo

Those might be slightly off, but that is the most draft capital of any lineup in MLB. These guys need to hit and put some runs up.

7 hits, 3 runs, 2-10 with RISP. Once again, the problem isn’t the replacements, it’s the regulars that are still healthy. Henderson, Mullins, Rutschman, Santander, and O’Hearn combine to go 3-19. Doesn’t matter who they get back unless the healthy guys (mainly Adley and Gunnar) start consistently producing.

There's a long list of why the season has gone in the tank but I haven't seen the list of reasons that Hyde's the guy to right the ship.

The rationale is basically that they were good with Hyde as manager before so he must be the right guy. I just don't buy that. I think great managers do a lot of things, but I've never heard of Hyde bringing any kind of wisdom to the table. Maybe it's all behind the scenes, but I haven't seen it.

I'm not firing him for the sake of firing him. I'm only doing so if I think there's a better person for the job. I feel like that person has to be out there though.

Terry Francona.
