Hey, weams and mclovin have both been trying to talk some sense into me about this. Let me do this:

In the original post, I could have added some observations that couldn't be reflected by a short video. What I observed in the two days we were there was a stocky but solid frame. I saw a young guy who was very enthusiastic and energetic as he ran from station to station. He was having a good time with his teammates while waiting to take PFP, but in all of his activities I saw someone who was focused, paying attention, putting forth his maximum effort. I saw how excited he was to pitch that first live BP, and weams seconded that impression when he talked to him briefly afterward. I saw him as one of the last to leave his [i.e., Delmarva] field, some time after all of his teammates had run off to eat. I saw him take a significant amount of time with one of those "please sign 30 cards for me so I can make money off of you" guys, and he did so pleasantly and patiently. When he was done, as we were walking past him and he was starting to head inside, he had a large smile on his face and again said a cheerful "hello" to both of us, then running inside to join his team.

It's so cool to be down here watching these young guys soaking up so much instruction from guys like Devereaux and Dickerson (*loved* listening to him) and Werner and Minor and... These kids don't take a minute's break between stations as they move from activity to activity for three hours straight.

Since it's raining here buckets off and on today, we might be indoors for awhile. If I can, I'll put together a video of some of the activity and post it.

You're an awesome contributor to this site.

Thank you, that is very reassuring, even though I am not surprised to hear it based on other things I've heard about Hobgood since we drafted him.

Wow. Starting to really regret having posted this now. Guess there really isn't enough good info that can come out of a minor league spring training video to make any difference, except to incite a lot of speculation about any number of things. So sorry.

:noidea:

Wow "D" I just saw this thread and I share your sadness! However, you can't let speculation by a few take away from the benefit that your videos and other posts bring to all.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own "facts."

I am going to try to post three still photos here to see if the photos, plus my latest spring training report - an interview with Hobgood on Wed. 3/10/2010 - the same day you took the video -- adds more facts to the mix.

Matt Hobgood 3/10/2010 His arms are as thick as some people's legs.

Despite being from a town about half an hour east of Anaheim, CA, Hobgood looks like what some people would call "country strong." He's just a massive dude. He could stand to lose 2-3" in the waist line but I'm sure he knows it.

He's not going to beat 46-year old Mike Devereaux in a race or a high jump competition, but he looks like he could tear a phone book in half.

Plenty of pitchers have been successful with that body type.

This young man could wrestle a steer...and win.

I had a dream the other night that I saw Hobgood pitch at a minor league game. He got crushed and left after an inning or so. Also, he looked like he was a 14 year old Drew Carrey (ableit a lot taller). Not to mention he complained and cursed the whole time. I wish I could have more positive thoughts about the kid lol.

That guy in your dream was named Joba.

I believe John Kruk was the one who said

"Hey lady, I am not an athlete, I am a baseball player"

That still makes me laugh. I do agree he does appear in the build to look similar to ponson. Some of the close ups clearly show that he has rather large forearms and arms.

I do think the uniform didn't give him any help. He might need to check out a larger size.

I can't wait to see his results this year.

Matt's mom posted this on my Facebook wall. :)

A decent start, eh, Joe?... Wed 3/17/10: 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K + 88-92 mph with a very good break on his curve = a happy MiL pitching coordinator and a very nice first start at Spring Training for the boy! GO O's!!!
