Actions Speak Louder than Words

BTW, I want to thank everyone for the kind words and I'm glad the majority enjoyed the piece and found it interesting. I understand the criticisms as well.

I also agree that it was Burnett and not Beckett in the Marlins trade. I honestly am not sure if that was my mistake or the sources on that one. I'll make the change though....

In the end, like I said all along, I had no ax to grind and hope the piece stands by my promise to be fair. There were things I decided to not print due to a lack of corroboration or fear of my sources being outed, but overall I think people get the gist of what I was trying to get out.

BTW: Thanks for the nice comments in the rep section as well. It's good know the piece was at least interesting and worth the time and effort.

Tony,

Perhaps it's a weird thing to say, but-- I'm proud of you. No one cares more about this franchise than you do, and that is evident in the amount of time, effort, and even emotion, that you have given/displayed over these years at the Hangout. This article was well written and quite fair in it's delivery. Good job... you have my sincere appreciation.

That's understandable, and I wouldn't ask you to share any more than what you're comfortable with. But without going into detail do you feel any of the information you withheld prevented you from getting any of the main points across that you really felt were important, or were you able to touch on everything that you hoped to without it?

Didn't he answer that in the line you quoted?

Great piece of work, Tony. Some of the things I was either aware of through past pieces of information here and in the media, and some things I'm not terribly surprised by or could have expected. But there were some really insightful stuff regarding the development and scouting aspects of the organization, the dynamics of cronyism in the organization past and present, and how the organization is coming up short compared to other teams in the division.

I think this article is a testament to the hard work you and the rest of the staff have done over the years on this site that has made stuff like this even possible. The fact that people very high up in the O's organization know who you are, and know about this site, is all because of you and the staff. We're all grateful for the stuff you guys do, day in and day out, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we look forward to what you have to put out in the future. Although for the sake of the fanbase, hopefully it will be because many of the problems you talked about are finally fixed!

Well, I suppose I can dream.

So, Tony..are you glad you did this?

Was it worth it to you considering the time you put into things?

Yes, because I think it needed to be told in it's entirety. I do think it was worth the time and effort because most people have enjoyed it and I think they now have a clearer picture of what went on and it going on without having to worry about what was rumor, half-truths, etc.

Earlier today I thought about emailing Jorge Arangure to ask him if he knew anything about this D. Stockstill/Bernhardt story, since he is both a former O's beat writer and someone who follows Caribbean baseball pretty closely.

And then I remembered this little debacle:

Guess I'll have to live with not knowing. :laughlol:

Yea, i agree with this.

While its not a surprise to many of us, I think it is good for everyone to be informed.

    • Do you actually the MLB postseason?  Most teams get their starters out by the 6th inning.
    • The whole “the key with Crochet” is exactly why trading for him makes no sense. On top of that, how does he bounce back next year after throwing so many more innings than he ever has? Im not questioning his talent, his upside, age, service time or anything.  It’s all on the side of the team that has him. But they are going to want multiple top 50 type prospects for a guy with ace potential and a lot of service time.  His name shouldn’t even be mentioned imo.
    • Suarez has not had one single quality start this season. While I love what he has given us, he is the classic definition of a “5 and dive” pitcher, which is fine, especially for the regular season as long as you have other starters (like Burnes) who can give consistent length. The problem with that for the post season is that forces your middle relievers into the game against teams with the best offenses. I’m not confident that the odds are necessarily stacked in our favor in some of those matchups. But hey you never know, Akin sure surprised me on Friday with a stellar outing.
    • What do the Rangers do at the deadline? Do they just stand pat and hope next year goes better?
    • I don’t think he’s worth Holliday/Mayo/Basallo level just because of the injury/innings limit concerns, but he’s pitching this year like one of the best SP in baseball and has 2.5 years of control (which will be cheap years in arb, considering he’s gone through once at just over league min).  The key with Crochet is he has to still be starting in the playoffs to get full value from him then. That means either you let him keep rolling and hope the innings don’t catch up, or you do load management by some combination of skipping starts, pitch count limits and/or shifting him to the pen. I could see a team using Crochet as a RP until September and then stretching him back out before the playoffs when you have expanded rosters to help bridge the innings during the initial shorter starts. But it’d be pretty wild to see a team pay what it’s going to take for him to then immediately shelf him like that.
    • This has been discussed a ton over the years.  It hasn’t been many but there have been a few. Jared Weaver was one. Searching through here or on google will give you the info.     But none of that matters imo. He’s not turning down that contract.  There is nothing but upside for him with that type of deal.  Now, maybe instead of 7 guaranteed years, we now get 6 (ie, we didn’t sign him to the deal before this season started, so that’s one less guaranteed year on the deal) but he’s not turning it down.
    • Zero chance he turns it down.  The money in that deal is essentially his best case scenario. Zippy chance.
