Felix Pie DFA'd!!!!!!!!!!!

Pie came in as a player with tremendous 5 tool potential. He left as a total failure. This is a complete indictment of MacPhail. There are two possibilities. One, he is a great athlete who never had a chance to be a good baseball player. Two, the player development of the Orioles organization is abysmal. Either way, it's on MacPhail. It should not take three years to determine #1. In fact, we could have gotten some value for him after his first year had we had the organizational ability to recognize it. He left as bad or worse in plate discipline, base running, defensive ability and power. If he can be a successful major league backup or marginal starter, the Orioles failed to develop his potential in all areas. So, either way, it's an organizational failure imo.

Remember when Pie tried to advance to third on a popup that was caught in the dugout? He was thrown out by twenty feet.

Then that same year he hit for the cycle.

The guy had tools. Just might be missing a lot of the tool between his ears.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone claims him.

I'm thinking a team might be doing the Orioles a favor if they do but I highly doubt he's claimed. He's one of the worst players on arguably the worst team in baseball. He doesn't really do anything well at this point.

Pie has enough service time that he can decline an assignment to the minors and opt for free agency. I hope he does.

Roch makes the same point

The Orioles are hoping that Felix Pie clears waivers and accepts an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk.

Manager Buck Showalter just met with reporters before tonight's game in Minnesota. He talked about the risk of designating Pie for assignment.

"The bad side of that is somebody could pick him up or he could become a free agent," Showalter said.

Pie has 2 ways he can leave the organization, he gets claimed by another team or he decides he wants to be a free agent and then he negotiates a deal with another team.

Pie looked so good in 2009, but he sure has been terrible since. I wish him good fortune. I doubt he remains in the Os organization. This move should have been made much earlier this season.

I don't like the move of DFAing Pie.

Rosters are about to expand. Angle was coming up anyway. This move just seems to lessen the O's inventory of players. Pie probably plays everyday in the Dominican winter league. He may improve his value enough that someone would have given up something of value for him. This move, at this time, right before rosters expand doesn't seem to make sense.

Maybe MacPhail has something in mind that I can't see right now.

Bull, Pie had a bunch of chances on the Cubs as well.

Pie was developed in Chicago, failed to stay on the roster there and got a change of scenery. Injuries and ineffectiveness kept out of the lineup. Sometimes it IS the player, this is one of those cases. As someone said earlier it wasn't all that long ago that peple were advocating starting Pie over Jones.

No he's not. The fact that this organization needs 764 ML plate appearances over the course of three seasons to come to a conclusion about Felix Pie is the reason why. I agree with you about the celebratory nature of some of the posts but he had more than a fair shot here. Hell, Crowley almost adopted him in 2009. He's reached his sell-by date. Even for the Orioles.

The Orioles are like every other organization (ok, they're not, but stay with me for a minute) in that they dump a player when they have someone who's likely to be more valuable to replace them. The Orioles didn't have a 4th outfielder better than Felix Pie, and it was pretty reasonable to not expend resources to find one since Pie (prior to this season) looked like a fine 4th outfielder. It's pretty questionable whether or not they have a better replacement even now, since Angle is a guy who has a sub-.700 OPS in a pretty substantial number of AAA PAs.

I'm reasonably happy that the Orioles didn't fall into the trap of releasing or otherwise dumping Pie just because they didn't like him. Taking action without a solution is the hallmark of a poor organization, and at least the O's didn't do that.

"It's a business. I know that. It's better for me, because here I don't play. And I know I can play every day," said Pie, who hit .220 with no homers and seven RBIs in 164 at-bats this season. "I showed the team I could play every day last year, and I did my job. This year, I tried to do my job, too. But it's difficult, tough not to play."
"Nothing is wrong with me."

This sums up why he was released. He isn't satisfied with the role of a 4th OFer and that's all he'll ever be.

    • Well I sort of disagree here. You said guys have been bad to questionable. I think that’s wrong. I just think a few guys have been awful and that has really hurt us. I would absolutely give Washington more time. Brade and Kane are well liked but doubtful they want to play them much right now. A trade should be considered if things don’t improve.
    • Yeah, I'd rather keep him over Soto.  I mean Soto can't start.  Yes Soto was dominant at times out of the bullpen but he was also gasoline on a fire out of the bullpen.  I would rather pay Suarez $4 or 5 million, knowing he can start or pitch in the bullpen than Soto, knowing he can only start and is liable to melt down when needed most.
    • It is funny how much Hays (the pre-2024 version anyway) matches the type of player they'll likely look for. I doubt that reunion happens though.
    • Weird thing about Suarez is that MASN had this being a 2 year deal when they talked about him back in April. ”The Orioles made another smart move with Suárez by signing him to a two-year contract in September. They knew what they’d ask from him and how it could contradict, and they didn’t want to give him any reasons to resist.” https://www.masnsports.com/blog/another-look-at-how-suarez-came-to-the-orioles
    • Dam the mosquito is in my Jelly. Please go away
    • Elias is refusing to spend money that Rubenstein has made available.  Do you have any sources?
    • Outside Hamilton, I can't really think of any areas or invidivuals outside the line that have really stepped up.  Humphrey and Stephens have played okay but it certainly hasn't offset the complete zeroes that Eddie Jackson and Marcus Williams have been.  I don't think you want to pull Hamilton off SS even though he can handle deep zone assignments fine, because he's essentially a linebacker that can cover wide receivers and there's too much value in that in the box.  And I think that Roquan/Simpson look lost in pass coverage because the safeties behind them are playing like butt.  Besides Roquan wasn't ever really a great coverage safety, he was kind of okay at it but he was never like a Lavonte David or Fred Warner there.   I'm starting to wonder if we need to either trade for a FS and/or start giving Ardarius Washington more snaps.  He certainly doesn't look worse than Jackson/Williams at this point in his limited playing time.  In general i think safety is an undervalued position so we're likely to get good value in trade.
