Why was Patton up? No need for Gonzalez to face Ichiro. We have off day on Thursday, you don't manage to let a guy finish the inning, win the game.

Because Buck doesn't react very well to situation that change quickly. He just doesn't. He's a very deliberate persona and it hurts his in game managing, especially his ability to know when to remove a starter.

Different times. The level of competition was simply different. And a lot of those pitchers blew up their arms and never played more than a few seasons - except you never hear about them, because they didn't survive the workloads.

Different ballparks sizes, too.

Not when your starter was a reliever up until about Mid-may. Hell, Gonzalez has been a releiver for most of his minor league carer. You don't push him when he clearly was gassed when you have a lefty up. Goodness gracious that's pitiful managing.

Just an aside... The Orioles have done a good job stretching him out. IIRC he was strictly a reliever out of spring training. He's pretty reliable now (already) for 100 pitches. 100 plus even.

It's not like it's that difficult to react. Even if you're late getting relievers up, you have Matt go out to the mound and chat, followed by the pitching coach going out for a conversation, then finally you walk up slowly. Being a manager shouldn't be this complicated.

There is a time to push a starter and a time not to. You don't ask a tiring righty to get lefties out in that park. You might not be in a position to win the next two games. No problem facing Chavez, Ichiro awful.

The 85 innings Gonzalez has logged this year is the second most in his career. The most? 1300.2 in 2007 in Single-A. Out of his 157 minor league games, he's started 50. This is the guy you want to pitch after 100 pitches in Yankees stadium the third time through the order? Really buck?

Seems like quite an overstatement to me. His record in close games and extra innings speaks for itself.

Its a fair criticism, but Gonzo wasnt facing a normal power hitter..If he gets Ichiro he goes 7 full and a great game...even a walk or a single wouldve been the end..but Buck wanted to squeeze one

more out. I dont have a ton of criticism for Bick on this one, though I wouldve pulled him after the first HR.

Ichiro will change his swing in that park, he would be a fool not to. They say he puts on a show in BP hitting HR's anyway. Common sense said he was looking for something to jerk there.

Only if you think it's reflective of his abilities, and not just, like, the entire bullpen being insanely good for a few months.

He's made some glaring mistakes recently.

Nolan Ryan(a freak of nature admittedly) pitched until he was 46 years old and pitched in 27 seasons.

Exactly. Bob Gibson is another high profile guy. But my point is, you won't hear about all the guys whose careers were ruined by ignorance about the dangers of high pitch counts. Because they can't lift their arms above their shoulders anymore.
