Oakland is a good team who is playing awesome baseball. Probably one of the only teams in baseball playing better than the O's.

There is so much panic over a game and a half, I don't recognize this place

Uh, didn't you see a lot of the same fan woosiness last night too? A bunch of hysterics freaked out by a cavernous stadium, a bunch of rookie pitchers, and ONE bad inning. :drek:

I feel like the team has precious few options as far as replacing him in the lineup right now. I'm sure there are a few options, but are any of them as obvious and as clear-cut as an elephant in the room? I don't think so. Not really. We don't exactly have a Machado just waiting in the wings to take his place.

Buck and DD have managed this roster extremely well all season. You know we're taking on a lot of injury when we have to dig deep and pull up a guy like Chavez. It's just a sign of the state of the team -- injuries are starting to take their toll.

With the injuries we've had recently, we have very little room for error. Our offense is clearly marginalized of late, with both Reynolds and Hardy cooling off, placing a lot more emphasis on our starting pitching. Only the bullpen is what it was two weeks ago...

I wouldn't be nearly as worried about this series if the rest of our season were a cakewalk. BUT:

We have a game against the A's, three against the Mariners, six against the Red Sox, four against the Blue Jays, and three against the Rays remaining.

Tomorrow's forecast looks... how shall we say it... grim.

The Mariners have been playing better than their season averages of late, and if we get King Felix, that's almost a lock for at least one L.

The Sox have been playing meh so we'll probably at least go .500 against them or better.

Ditto for the Jays.

If the Rays are still playing like they did this past week when we face them in the last series of the RS, it'll be good. Otherwise, look out for a couple of L's.

I'm thinking that out of the remaining games, we'll probably be right around .500. 17 games, 500 puts us at about 89 or 90 wins. That's borderline post season. Absolute borderline.

Basically guys, our entire season is going to come down to a couple of games where we either lose when we were supposed to win, or win when we were supposed to lose. I'd love for tonight to be one of the latter, but so far... :ohlord:

I couldn't disagree more. The O's schedule is about to get much easier after tomorrow. And what was the outcome the last time they faced "King Felix?" They won. I don't see a "lock" for any losses there. Wow, these 14 years must really have created a culture of losing. I am glad the players on this team don't seem to know anything about it.

    • Let's be honest, Gunnar ain't finishing second either.
    • Yeah, I don't think the Orioles' struggles against NL teams is very meaningful, but I do think the NL is stronger this year.  All the NL division leaders have looked formidable and steady throughout the season.  But also the Padres and Mets have kicked their seasons into another gear and have really impressed over the past couple of months.  Compare them to the Wild Card teams in the AL, and they just appear more formidable on paper.   Also the DBacks are pretty much outhitting everyone right now -- though that's been offset by their not so effective pitching.
    • For sure he is out of consideration as the MVP favorite to copy Cal.  Of course,  Cal didn't have an Aaron Judge to compete with.  The runner-up in MVP voting in 1983 was a guy named Eddie Murray.  Eddie had more HR, more RBI, a higher slugging and OPS than Cal, but Cal had a higher WAR and batting average (.318 to .303).  I wonder if Eddie is bitter about losing the MVP to Cal?  A case could be made for either one.
    • Going to lookup splits before/after AS break for 2024, but my gut tells me the O’s faltered against the NL Central division the last two years. Let’s see how October plays out!
    • I've heard folks I trust a lot here report on him as being good but on a gut level those plays bugged me too. I think Holliday is sufficient alone as a 5th infielder as a playoff roster gets configured, and believe in series you get injury replacements if Urias re-rolls the ankle or Gunnar breaks somebody else's arm.    Rivera and Soto are kind of both about that speed. From comments we know Urias, Westburg, Mountcastle the probable return order, but TBD on the Rivera, Soto, Eloy departures.    I think there's some value to Coby Mayo staying around even if he just watches ala '70 Grich "did not play in series".
    • He missed a cycle by inches on one of the doubles.
