Doesn't make sense since free agency starts in November, some number of days after the World Series ends.

Yeah, I get confused by it too.  

I just look at the service time.  Flash had 5 years of service entering the year, so if he spends the whole season on the 25 or DL, he'll be at 6 years and FA eligible.

Orioles would probably give him a minor league deal with a major league invite.
