Portis vs. Turner ...

I say Turner starts the season. He looked pretty solid this year, and I think Fridge will stay with him. Portis will probably get some shots here and there, and he'll really have to take advantage of them (and look great in practice) if he wants more time on the field.

Don't forget Steffy!

God I hope he's the third string, but Franklin did recruit him here and maybe he really likes him. I'm hoping for a platoon with Portis and Turner splitting snaps really, sort of the way LSU used their two QB's this year, with Portis getting a bit bigger role than Perriloux.

Start Turner... move Portis to a different position where he can use his speed. Make Steffy #2 and then let the back-ups fall in where they may.

We have seen QBs struggle in their first 1/2 dozen starts (since McBrien and Hill)... Portis wasn't a definitive starter this past spring... no reason to believe he will come back for his senior year any more advanced.

Pretty sure Portis will be a Jr. when he comes back.

Portis cannot change positions. I doubt he wins the starting job, but even if he doesn't, the Fridge and Franklin need to develop some packages where Portis is at QB to give us a different look, similar to the Flynn/Perriloux situation or Tebow/Leak.

Aside from that, there is NO depth at QB right now that would allow us to move the second string QB to a different position. Turner has established himself as an ACC level starter, but beyond that, there isn't much there if Portis moves. Steffy is clear a "break glass in case of emergency" guy at this point - he won't win you many games. And Jamarr Robinson is still young. Beyond that, no scholarship QB on the roster.

Speaking of which, I'm disappointed we didn't get a QB this year. Hopefully we can grab Chris Harper. That would be a real coup.

I think they need some continuity going into next year. As excited as I get about Portis' athletic ability and potentially getting the option attack back into the offense, I'm afraid that Portis is a "run first" QB and won't have enough "touch" or accuracy on his short/intermediate passes.

Anybody remember Ronald Curry when he was QB w/the Tarheels? A very dangerous QB, just not a good QB. He could make some big plays w/his feet and throw the long ball but he'd make some bad reads and would also have trouble making accurate throws.

Turner to start off of last years performance. Portis to spell him, maybe take over midway in the season, Steffey HOPEFULLY will go to become a D back. He has been consistantly TERRIBLE everytime he has played. I think we're in good shape with Turner/Portis.
