Would Manny sign with us for 300M?

Has anyone asked him or his agent?

Manny will sign with whoever makes him the best offer, just like pretty much any player out there. But the peanut gallery around here will still claim it would be stupid to sign "one player" to a "300m contract" even when that "one player" can get you the wins that 50m spread over 4 players would on the open market every year, with the price increasing by the day.

The Orioles already have an advantage with the familiarity he has with us and not anyone else, and they need to make a full court press to retain him no matter what the cost. Now they won't do that, and the franchise morale/near/long term future will be destroyed because of their stupid ridiculous "policies" designed to maximize the bottom line and minimize even the slightest bit of risk above anything else.

...ok let me simplify this even a bit more. Getting something is rather than nothing right? For example, if someone offered you a $20 or nothing, you'd take the $20 right?

It’s not $20 or nothing. Its $20 right now, or $10 in a few months. Plus you get to use whatever you’re selling for those few months.

...use whatever we're selling to what? make the playoffs? that's not happening with or w/out Manny. The only argument to keep him is to to fill seats and that's a very short sighted reason. Because the seats that they fill this season will be empty for the next few season if they don't start thinking about the future.

Prospects are a dime a dozen. Most of ours dont pan out. Look at Santander. Last year everyone had such high hopes for him.

But I agree Manny will not sign with us. Even if we offer 300M. He wants to play with a playoff team.

Wayyyyyyy too early to say Santander has not panned out.  I still have high hopes for him, and a meh month and a half won't change that.

And the "most of ours dont pan out" excuse doesn't mean the Orioles shouldn't acquire young controllable players.  Jones and Tillman panned out, as wildbill astutely posted.

What kind of future does a team have when they finally get a draft pick that looks like he might have an all time great career...So they dump him?

Because they can't keep him.  It sucks that they can't, but they can't.  So "dumping" him for young controllable players yields (usually) a much better future than playing out the string for him and losing him for nothing.

Per Fangraphs, Manny already has been worth $19.2 mm this season, compared to the $16 mm we’re paying him for the entire season.

You know what's crazy about this stat?  Fangraphs has Manny at 2.4 WAR this season so far.  However, the entire team total, including Manny, is 1.6 WAR for the position players.  So the sum of all our position players without Manny is -0.8 WAR.

How bad would we be (and will be) without Manny?

If Orioles ownership wasn't so monetarily tight (compared to other teams) we could offer Manny 30M a year and still have a 60M lower payroll than Boston. 60M extra gets outstanding pitchers for us.

If you cant spend the money other teams do well look where we are now.

Interleague visit to Baltimore will give Phillies up-close look at Manny Machado

Quote

Don’t think the Phillies haven’t noticed.

It’s no secret that the Phils covet Machado. They know him well, too. Team president Andy MacPhail was the Orioles’ general manager in 2010 when Baltimore selected Machado in a draft run by amateur scouting director Joe Jordan, who now runs the Phillies’ farm system. General manager Matt Klentak and assistant GM Ned Rice also have Orioles/Machado ties.

The Phillies likely will be among the most active bidders. They have money to spend, and with a maturing young core on the cusp on playoff contention, there’s no better time to spend hundreds of millions on a star player in his prime.

With the Orioles already buried in the Red Sox/Yankees-dominated AL East, they could deal Machado before the July 31 trade deadline. But because he is almost certain to test his value on the open market rather than signing an extension now, it’s difficult to imagine that the Phillies would trade prized prospects (19-year-old righthander Sixto Sanchez, for instance) to rent Machado for two months.

Still, these next two days will give the Phillies an up-close look at the player who, for the right price, could be the centerpiece star of their next great team.

So Manny won't sign with us because he doesn't want to play with a lousy team. He wants to play on a playoff team. So the only thing to do is for the Orioles to desperately grasp for straws, and trade Manny  for anything we can get?
