They are certainly opening themselves up for criticism if Ubaldo gets bombed the next couple of starts.

They can skip him next start, move him to pen and then bring Miggy back if they choose. I don't think they will be real hard headed about this, too much at stake.

This is disappointing.

The goal of the organization should be to WIN. The 25-man roster should be comprised of the 25 healthy players who give us the best chance to WIN. Does anyone on here feel more confident with Ubaldo today than you would if Miggy was taking the hill??? ANYONE?!?

This is strictly an administrative type move that might be OK in April or May but not mid-August in the heat of a pennant race. I don't like to see anyone lose their job due to injury but Ubaldo's performance did nothing to earn him a spot the moment he got healthy, especially considering how the rotation has done without him. Obviously we can't cut the guy, but bury him in the 'pen until a starter falters. You could argue that "Ubaldo has a history that says he'll get better" but we've already got 5 guys doing just fine.

We have enough of a lead that two lousy starts shouldn't kill us. Clearly, they signed him with the idea that Good Ubaldo was worth the risk of Bad Ubaldo.

You have to think about more than 2 weeks when you think about winning. In a couple weeks the rosters will expand and if Jiminez struggles he won't leave the bench. You got over 3 years left on his contract...do you want to release him? I don't think that would be good for the team at all.

As for the bullpen... You can't pitch out of the pen if you can't throw strikes.

They aren't going to force feed him out there if he sucks. It's one start. We have off days on Aug 14 and 21st. We only need a 5th starter 3 times after today if they are creative. Might be a chance to rest one or two starters arms for a brief time.

But does the same risk/reward scenario work when the rest of the staff is pitching well and Ubaldo is setting a career worse mark in walks?

You guys do realize that despite the time off he is still leading the AL in walks?

I disagree. I think you have to give Ubaldo the opportunity to be the pitcher he was at the end of last season. If he does that, we should go far in the post-season. If he doesn't, sit him down and give the spot to Gonzalez.

At least he's leading in something. But to your question, yes, that scenario should still be in effect unless you're ready to call the entire contract a mistake and move on from there. I think they are far from that point.

I think something could be done this year and not jeopardize the remaining three years of the deal.

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
