Rangers are front-runners for Hamels. Hearing general framework for package I can confidently say 1. Philly isn't leaving value on the table despite holding on to Cole through the off-season, and 2. even if interested Baltimore didn't have the horses to get it done.

I would be stunned if Hamels isn't in Texas, and I'd expect it will go down to the wire while the Phillies try and entice one of the other suitors to top the Texas collection.

I wonder how long Tulo lasts on the carpet in Toronto.

Good question. And now he can't be traded without his permission. He will improve their defense up the middle while he is on the field, but that might not be a whole lot. He could always play in the field when they are on the road and DH at home.

Gerardo Parra of the Brewers is also a player that the Angels are interested in, per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (via Twitter). Heyman breaks down his market, citing the Mets and Orioles as prime suitors (along with the Halos) for the left-handed hitter. There’s also a classic mystery team involved, per the report

A free agent on a career year ..with a 800ish OPS. But the past few years are unimpressive. Could be somebody that we can figure a way to hang onto.

Prospects are prospects until proven in the majors and I don't trust any pitcher in Colorado. At the moment, Toronto wins this deal like they won the Donaldson deal.

Graveman would be helping them more than Donaldson.

What are the Blue Jays thinking? They still need pitching.

Looks like they are trying to get ballplayers who have the want to attitude. The Jays always have talent but never seem to win.Heard that they are trying to change the culture over in the clubhouse. They think Martin,Donaldson and now Tulo might help. They do still need pitching.

Which team in recent memory is most comparable to this Blue Jays squad? My first thought was the late 90s Mariners. That team only won 85 games in 1996 and 76 games in 1998 despite having A-Rod, Griffey, Edgar Martinez and Jay Buhner in the middle of the lineup because they didn't have any pitching outside of Johnson and Moyer.

And the Jays don't have Johnson or Moyer.

I think some of the folks here are kind of missing what just happened. The Jays traded away a 32 year old, declining SS who was mediocre with the bat and poor defensively, for a 30 year old SS locked up through 2020 at an affordable rate who is a clear upgrade on offense and defense.

Why would you NOT do that if you're the Jays?

Latroy Hawkins apparently has some value too, of course just for this year.

The better question (imo) is what in the world do the Rockies want with Reyes? Seems absolutely absurd to me unless they're about to flip him?

    • If you’d rather have Trumbo under any circumstances, well then. God only knows how many extra runs scored because he let a ball fall in front of him, but it was a lot. An out at the plate is only an out, and it may or may not come with RISP, but a missed catch in the OF gives the offense another chance, extends the inning, puts more pressure on the pitcher.  Mullins saved a lot of runs with his defense and speed even when he wasn’t hitting. im not talking about errors, nor am I talking about routine fly balls, but about the extra inches a good defender gets that make the difference between a catch and a non- catch, and that’s important. And no one knows before the game what will be required of the defender. nine guys come to the plate, and if one of them is in the lineup not for his offense, but for what he offers with the glove, that’s fine. The other eight should cover for him. Thats why Kevin Pillar had a successful career.
    • Not sure why you bothered to quote me. I was helping another poster figure out how not important a left fielder is when it comes to defense in the modern game. You don't start a left fielder for defense.
    • Were we on Sunday Night Baseball that Sunday 9/17?    My Google of Rosh Hashanah 2023 said it ended at sundown the Sunday. I'm not Jewish either but I am baseball, and in childhood the Sandy Koufax stories I remembered most were about Yom Kippur. The Google also reminded me Kremer's turn as Texas finished the sweep was just 2 days after October 7th. Let's get a sweep, guys.
    • I don’t care what Slater did before he came to us this season. Just like I didn’t care what Hicks did before he came to us last year.  Since we acquired Slater he has a .707 OPS vs LHP and Cowser has a .500 OPS vs LHP.  It’s a coin flip. If we stick to what we’ve done, then it will be Slater. He hasn’t not started versus a LH SP since we acquired him.  I’m good with him or Cowser. Mullins is a lock. If I had to bet I’d think the lineup will be, 1. Gunnar SS L 2. Westburg 2B R 3. Santa RF S 4. Mounty 1B R 5. Adley DH S 6. Slater LF R 7. Urias 3B R 8. Mullins CF L 9. McCann C R
    • So he pitched on it last season?
    • Without Looking - Do you know who was second in Innings Pitched?  Pretty incredible.
    • Looks like it began on Friday, Sep 15 and ended on Sunday, Sep 17.
