Any Bullets Left?.....Or Going Down In Flames?

The Orioles went into the All-Star break winning 10 of 13 games and climbed back to .500. Since then, they have gone 18-18, still at .500, but falling in the standings, now 7 games out and 2 1/2 back in the wild card.

Have the Orioles run out of bullets and begun their death spiral to fall out of contention?

It was obvious earlier in the year that this years team wasn't very good. With all the guys that have been released/demoted and Parra as the only real addition how can we expect to be much better. My observation is that this team is very DH heavy and the wrong decision was made to hang in rather than sell. The future would've benefitted from a sell off better than a half hearted attempt to improve.

I of course desperately hope I'm wrong, but I can't see a scenario in which we make things interesting in the last month and change. The Twins series was crucial, and being swept in four games at home, many in devastating fashion, crushed our spirit. This road trip will be the one that finally breaks our back. Losing last night's game in the fashion we did (Ubaldo cruising, then the wheels completely coming off), after losing the series to the Twins like we did, is going to be very, very difficult to come back from. Most importantly, we play virtually nothing but winning teams the rest of the way, against which we have struggled mightily. It's just not going to happen.

To be honest, at this point I'm curious if there are guys that we may have snuck through waivers at some point over this month that we may look to deal. That certainly could be a stretch, but we could be four under after this trip.

Man, EXACTLY how I felt. By treading water (and actually making things worse by trading Davies for a guy we won't more than likely keep) and NOT trading our assets, we hurt the team long-term. I was upset over the lack of offseason moves, but the decision at the deadline was worse for the franchise long-term.

It is what it is....makes me upset, but you do your best to keep your head up. I just feel at times, we don't have a clear direction on things because of PA. Was it all DD's decision? Who knows...

You can say it was obvious the team wasn't any good but we were actually in 1st place in June and leading the wild card race about a week ago. Easy to say now how obvious it was.

People around here waffling on opinions and using hindsight? No way.

I'll bet we still have another run in us. I'm hoping one of the guys (Mancini? Walker? Alvarez?) can give us a spark in September.

Starting pitching becomes a little less important once rosters expand (since Buck is more inclined to the bullpen earlier with the extra arms), but it still is what will make or break us IMO.

I thought the team would be about as good as last year's (fewer runs scored with the loss of Cruz, but better pitching with improvement from Ubaldo and a bigger contribution from Gausman), and that the competition in the AL East would be weaker, other than possibly Toronto.

And it did look like things were headed that way. Briefly.

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
