vs. YANKEES, 9/09

I believe that the rule states that the batter "must make an effort to avoid getting hit by the pitch."

I have never seen it enforced, though.

I remember when the Red Sox tried arguing it in a 1985 game against the Yankees when Don Baylor was hit by a pitch, but made no effort at all to avoid it.

They argued in vain, as Baylor was awarded 1st base.

Harry Wendelstedt in NL called it in 1968 when Don Drysdale was at 44 innings in his consecutive no score inning streak. It was on Dick Dietz, would have forced in a run and ended the streak. Instead he flies out and Drysdale went on to set a 58 and 2/3 streak that was the record at the time.

I actually just dug the game up, and my memory served me correctly.

It was a Saturday afternoon game (I remember the sun was shining when reading about it in the newspapers the next day), and Baylor was hit by 2 pitches in said game.

Baylor was of the Frank Robinson school...hit me, I don't care, I stand on top of the plate, I will take the base, break your shortstop's leg on my takeout slide, then hit a homer the next time up.
