Do you think we'll trade Britton with this deal done?

I know you're not asking me, but I sure hope so. O'Day was the one player I did not want to see return because I don't think a midmarket franchise with our payroll restrictions can afford to spend this kind of dough on a set-up man. Despite all failures in player development across the team, the one spot we've seemed adept is converting strong arms to effective bullpen roles. With Givens, Wright, Wilson and Drake, I was pretty confident we'd have a passable bullpen.

Britton could be our best trade piece. Saw a headline the Cubs were looking for a dominant closer/backend type. They are stocked with elite minor league talent. Their top 5 prospects would all probably be our best. See what Britton's nasty sinker can get us in return.

No; I think they may be out of the SP sweepstakes in kind. Expect a Doug Fister/Chris Young type while the team focuses on a significant LH bat.

1. Britton

2. O'Day

3. Givens

4. Brach

5. Matusz

6. Bundy

7. LHP (Riefenhauser?)

A bullpen that has no room for Mike Wright is a heckuva bullpen. Garcia and probably McFarland also put on minor-league reserve.

I think you are right about starters. Could also see a trade with the Mets or Astros for one of their lower tier starters.

I was wondering the same thing. Could it be possible to trade Britton for the biggest haul DD can get, and slide O'Day into the closer role since hes making more money now.

One thing's for sure, the pressure's on Tillman, Gausman and Gonzalez to do better in 2016 and for Ubaldo to at least replicate this season. Whether they get another starter or not.

How does that package compare to the one the Red Sox gave up for Kimbrel?

Less than the Kimbrel package, which I thought was a clear overpay in value (but Dumbro doesn't generally care about that).

Drew Silva

Something a little more official should be coming soon, and it figures to have a domino effect on the rest of the relief pitching market at this week’s Winter Meetings in Nashville. There aren’t too many attractive free agents in that regard, but a big Aroldis Chapman trade looms.

O’Day registered a fantastic 1.52 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 82/14 K/BB ratio in 65 1/3 innings this past season for the O’s. He boasts a 1.92 ERA in 263 innings since 2012.

    • Or a guy that can just come up and give innings when the bullpen is shot after a doubleheader or even give a spot start and then be sent back down.  Is Pham a likely future ML starter, no, but he might bail the O's out of a pitching bind multiple times next year.
    • Saturday's game was epically bad and not the type of loss a team on the upswing into the playoffs would suffer and one that I certainly hate to witness. I couldn't watch most of the game Sunday, but I wouldn't DVR it and then peek at the score either, I don't think that I would ever watch if I knew the outcome of a game in advance. The surprise elation (Gunnar's bases loaded double) and the agony of the non-send and inability to hit a sac fly is what keeps me coming back, old fool that I am.
    • Predicting what the attendance will do next year is like predicting Hurrican season in January.  There are so many outside factors that it is just a guess.  How will they finish the year, how much will the spend in the offseason, how many corporations want to get ticket plans,   how is the economy in 6 months, how do they play next season what teams we play and when, will teams like Red Sox, Yankees and big draws play well.   I also think one of the biggest factors is what corporations want to sponsor give aways and what time of promotions will they run.  If you look at attendance some of the largest attendance games minus the Phillies, Yankees games are for the best giveaway souvenirs.
    • I’m a big supporter of Brandon Hyde, but the last game against Detroit I think he made a mistake. Second and third, nobody out….I would have had mullins bunt. He’s a good bunter, and with holiday at third I think that’s walk off.
    • So I guess Ohtani decided he was bored this year since he wasn’t pitching or playing the field, and decided to steal bases just to have something else to do besides hit.
    • I’d say maybe they would have reached 2013 levels (2.357 mm), which would have been about another 76,000 fans.  I seriously doubt they would have reached 2014 (2.464 mm, another 183,000 fans).
    • Great point. You are right Frobby. It wouldn't have been quite as bad if the Orioles dropped these series and they had to face Skubal both times but to be fortune enough not to get him either time and still lose 4 of 6 was even more disheartening.
