If they don't sign Manny they will be rebuilding in 3 years anyway.....might as well go for it now.

It would have been nice to have a longer window, but that looks nearly impossible with the state of the farm. Hopefully we can win a championship.....would make a rebuild much more bearable.

Spearing a mastodon overhand is natural. Just not 120 times in three hours.
Sometimes they just need more stabbin'.

Presumably "stabbing a dead mastodon" was actually a saying up until several thousand years ago. That emoji would have been cool too.

Just caught yesterday's Bird's Eye View podcast. The first two minutes about their parting with Matusz should be nominated for some kind of baseball podcast award. I try to catch all the relevant O's podcasts, but this one, particularly the intro, is a good place to start if you don't normally tune in to podcasts. http://www.birdseyeviewbaltimore.com/episode-165-os-bohs-ice-floes/

All of the back and forth in this thread raises an interesting point for consideration.

Is it possible that trading draft picks for multiple Minor League prospects who have already been vetted enough to prove they're not duds is a viable strategy for improvement?

Consider that there is considerable risk in any draft pick, and the deeper you go in the draft, the higher the risk. Doesn't the trading of lower draft picks for multiple mid-level prospects somewhat indemnify the club against the 40% or so of those picks that would be complete minor league flops?

Isn't it essentially a pre-screening method? If employed well, it might be a very sound strategy.

It's conceivable.

The problem as I see it is that stratagem requires you to have a better grasp of the true potential of these players than the teams they play for.

Or just prey upon their hunger for an addition pick to try to be extra fancy with their draft strategy.

Certainly, at least as good a grasp.... and perhaps a solid understanding of at which positions a potential trading partner might be a little fat.

Player potential and player value (to a given organization) are not always the same.
